Immunising the second group, New Zealand’s 480,000 frontline healthcare workers, and 234,000 people living in “high-risk settings” like rest homes has already begun, and will continue until May.

The third round of vaccinations will be for all other people aged 75 or over, then those over 65, then people with pre-existing health conditions like heart disease, diabetes, respiratory conditions and cancer. The Government hopes to begin vaccinating this group – 1.7 million people – in May.

The rest of the population, two million people, will start receiving the vaccine from July.

Two Environment Canterbury councillors are pushing for a two-year trial of free buses in greater Christchurch, but the move is likely to cost ratepayers and taxpayers millions of dollars.

The regional council, which is already proposing a 24.5 per cent rate increase, will vote on Thursday whether to investigate a two-year public transport free-fare trial to start from mid-next year.

ECan councillor John Sunckell, who requested the vote along with fellow councillor Megan Hands, said ECan had not been “heroic” enough in looking at public transport options within Christchurch.

Hi neighbours,

Did you know...

One of Christchurch’s most important monuments was inspired by a letter to The Press.

A correspondent known only as L.M.I., but later identified as Mrs Wyn Irwin, had a letter published on July 24, 1919, in which she wondered if some arches that were put up for peace celebrations could become permanent, and “why Christchurch, by nature adapted to arched bridges, as the river flows through the centre of the city, and its banks are considered the main beauty spots of the town, has been so remiss in not adopting this mode of architecture.”

L.M.I. referred to a book that described a Bridge of Remembrance in Japan, and even suggested the Christchurch bridge be given that name.

“If that idea were adopted here, and the site chosen, the Cashel street bridge, how appropriate it would be. I choose this site in preference to all others, on account of its being the bridge all our soldiers have passed over, therefore the most historic bridge in Christchurch.”

Soon, The Press editorialised. And so it came to pass. The bridge was unveiled in 1924.
