Almost 1500 Christchurch households could soon have their recycling bins confiscated as the city council cracks down on people who refuse to separate their waste.

About 180 yellow wheelie bins have already been removed and the council has sent final warnings to another 1450 residents.

To get the bins back, they will have to pay $97.65 and sign a statement promising to abide by the rules. Their bins will be monitored to make sure they keep that promise.

Christchurch City Council has spent close to $1.5 million sending almost 1500 truckloads of contaminated material from yellow bins to landfill since May. That equates to about 41 per cent of all yellow bins.

Do you agree with council's strict recycling approach? Let us know below.

Over 50% of hospitalisations with coronary artery disease (CAD)

There are significant, even lifesaving benefits in early detection of any issues with your heart and arteries.

Why is this test different?

This Gold Standard test uses the SphygmoCor® a scientifically validated TGA/FDA approved Pulse Wave Analyser (PWA), a non-invasive device, used in the top 20 hospitals in the USA. youtu.be...

This test not only looks at your Brachial (arm) blood pressure, it analyses your;

Peripheral (arteries) resistance,
Cardiac efficiency (SEVR) and
Abnormalities in heart rhythm (arrhythmia).

Firefighters are preparing for the possibility of a massive wildfire after seven fires were deliberately lit at a Christchurch forest in less than a month.

The fires have left some nearby residents concerned their properties may come under threat if a large blaze does take hold in Bottle Lake Forest.

The latest fire happened near Landfill Ave, Parklands, about 5.15pm on Monday.

Senior fire risk management officer Bruce Irvine said it was not yet known whether one person or a group were responsible for lighting the fires.

The fires had all been dealt with easily so far, but there was a real risk a blaze could become out of control and spread over kilometres as the fire risk increased heading into summer.

There have been issues in the past with camping activities taking over the car park and preventing the public from accessing the beach and surf lifesaving club.

In response to complaints from the community, Christchurch City Council’s chief executive Dawn Baxendale decided earlier this year to close the car park to freedom campers from 7pm Friday to 7pm Sunday during the surf lifesaving season.

The surf lifesaving season traditionally starts at Labour Weekend.

Greater Christchurch has overwhelmingly voted red – giving Labour all but two of its electorate seats and the majority of the party vote.

Labour supporters at the party's election event in Christchurch on Saturday night were barely able to keep a lid on their excitement and glee at National’s astonishingly poor performance in the city – and their knives came out for their parliamentary colleagues in Blue.

“At last, Christchurch has woken up,” said Duncan Webb, Christchurch Central’s incumbent.

“It’s been a long campaign, exhausting, but the reward you get for that, it’s amazing.
