Just wondering who thinks its a good Idea to start a give a little Im sure there a at least 16000 people / business from christchurch that would be willing to give $3 to fund him for 3 more years to get him to 50 years of wizarding. And I think it would be more special for him to be contracted by the wizards supporters of christchurch than the BS Council.

Join the rest of the motu on October 28 by taking part in our national earthquake drill and tsunami hīkoi, ShakeOut. Signing up only takes 2 minutes and when you do, you’ll be entered to win a personal emergency grab bag or civil defence wheelie bin kit from NZ Civil Defence.
ShakeOut takes place around the world to remind people of the right action to take during an earthquake:

DROP - down on your hands and knees. This protects you from falling but lets you move if you need to.

COVER - your head and neck (or entire body if possible) under a sturdy table or desk (if it is within a few steps of you). If there is no shelter nearby, cover your head and neck with your arms and hands.

HOLD - on to your shelter (or your position to protect your head and neck) until the shaking stops. If the shaking shifts your shelter around, move with it.

Head to www.shakeout.govt.nz... to sign up today and get involved!

Vaccination challenge for east Christchurch as just 16 go to school clinic

East Christchurch has some of the country’s lowest Covid-19 vaccination rates, but despite a push to increase uptake that involved a possible cash prize just 16 people turned up to a community vaccination clinic on Wednesday.

Wainoni is among the bottom 10 suburbs for the vaccine uptake, with 70.2 per cent of the population having had a single dose. Neighbouring Aranui is the least vaccinated suburb in Canterbury and among the lowest in New Zealand, with 59.7 per cent of its residents having received a first dose.

But just 16 people turned out for a vaccination event at Haeata Community Campus on Wednesday – albeit a day blighted by torrential rain and blustery winds.

Principal Peggy Burrows said she was pleased to open the school for Covid-19 vaccinations after being approached by the Canterbury health board about two and a half weeks ago.

“My stance is it has to be a choice. You can’t compel people to, but I’m certainly vaccinated myself and so is my family, and we just provide opportunities because that is what education is about," she says. Continue reading here.

When you’re a firefighter out on a call it’s essential to know someone in the brigade has got your back, but it’s also handy knowing someone is supporting you back at the office.

Steve Gee and Jono Turnbull are volunteer firefighters who both work at Connetics (Southern) Ltd in Cromwell, a network contractor that specialises in power installations and maintenance.

While they’re with different brigades - Gee is chief fire officer for Clyde and Turnbull is a recruit for Cromwell - and have very different roles within the business, they say having a co-worker who understands their dual roles is critical.

They’re grateful to work for a company that understands the importance of their role and values their commitment to the community.

Gee and Turnbull are two of the nearly 12,000 Kiwis who volunteer for Fire and Emergency New Zealand and are ready to respond in a crisis.

Their ability to do that depends on workplaces who are willing to be part of the back-up crew.

Stuff’s community newspapers are partnering with Fire and Emergency to recognise the local businesses who support this important work with the Proud Employer mark, which acknowledges the role they play in keeping communities safe by allowing their staff to respond to an incident during working hours.

“The company is very supportive of the community input that Jono has in Cromwell and I have in Clyde,” says Gee.

With his job based in Cromwell, Gee is less likely to be called out during the day, but says volunteering for Fire and Emergency constantly requires juggling responsibilities between his work and home lives. However, he says volunteering is more than worth it.

“People often ask me why I’m involved with Fire and Emergency. It’s because I have a genuine interest and It’s something I can do to give back to the community. There’s also a lot of value in terms of your own personal development. I treat it as a sport, a hobby and a whole lot of other things rolled into one. It keeps me fit, it keeps the brain active, and it keeps me grounded.”

Turnbull volunteered for mountain rescue in the UK and was keen to continuing volunteering in some capacity when he moved to New Zealand. He was thrilled to be accepted as a recruit with the Clyde Brigade.

“It’s a fantastic thing to be involved in,” he says.

A stretch of Avonside Drive will eventually be closed to make way for a shared pathway connecting central Christchurch to the sea at New Brighton, the city council has confirmed.

Councillors agreed on Tuesday to close a 1-kilometre section of the road between 748 Avonside Drive and Wainoni Rd, as well as a 100-metre stretch of Kerrs Rd, at some point between 2023 and 2026, depending on the final design.

The planned 8km shared pathway will begin at Barbadoes St in the central city and mostly follow the Avon River before reaching New Brighton.

The council committed to spending $316 million on the Ōtākaro Avon River Corridor in this year's 10-year budget and said back in June that the shared pathway, named the City to Sea pathway, would be built within three years.
