Hi Canterbury,

What do you think about the opportunity to transfer this hillside to public ownership? Will you be donating?

500-hectares of Lyttelton hillside has been put up for auction and Stuff has teamed up with a charitable trust to get the high-country plot into public ownership.

The Rod Donald Banks Peninsula Trust launched its Te Ahu Pātiki project to purchase the spot between Mt Herbert and Mt Bradley after an offer from a local farmer.

$1.5 million is needed to set up the park and the trust has been crowd funding for the last $600,000 it needs.

With five weeks until the deadline sale, $120,000 still needs to be raised.

Multiple land crossings scattered across the private land have been accessible only through land-owner permission. Ron Donald Trust manager Suky Thompson says that public ownership would guarantee the Te Ara Pātaka tramping network, running from Akaroa to Lyttelton, would always be accessible.

"Those private land crossings are unsecured, which means that they rely on the goodwill of the current landowner. If that landowner was to have a change of attitude, or if the land was to be sold to a new owner who didn't want the public there, they could be closed."

"A host of golden daffodils .... fluttering and dancing in the breeze," so wrote the poet William
Wordsworth.

But he would have found it impossible to "wander lonely as a cloud" at the Christchurch Botanic Gardens on September 19, 1948.

A Sunday stroll in the gardens has long been a ritual for Christchurch folk but the daffodil lawn has attracted more than the usual crowds this Sunday. It is the 10th anniversary of the annual Daffodil Day observance.

Framed by the band rotunda, left, and Avon River footbridge, right, people celebrate the occasion in their Sunday best.

Hey, wonderful Neighbourly community!

I am a parent of Te Ara Maurea Roydvale School and helping their fundraising quiz this term. We are working towards purchasing a portable sound system for the school.

As a team we are keen to work alongside and promote local businesses so wondering whether there might be anyone keen to donate a product or service to support their local school to use for our raffle/auction on the night. As a thank you we will include your business in our promotional material. Another option is to sponsor a round and have extra information shared about your business on the night.

Feel free to pm me for more information and I am more than happy to send you the official letter if needed. Or if you are keen for a good night out then perhaps considering coming.

Thanks so much, Stuti Matta

Kiwis have already put up more than half the cash needed to bring two of Christchurch’s highest peaks into public ownership and turn them into a conservation park.

The Press has teamed up with the Rod Donald Banks Peninsula Trust on its Te Ahu Pātiki project, to help raise enough money to buy a 500-hectare block between Mt Herbert and Mt Bradley.

The aim is to make sure the public will always have access to a sprawling network of popular walking tracks, and to let the whole block return to native bush.

A Givealittle page was launched this morning to help the trust overcome its last hurdle. Click the links below to read the full story and donate.

Zhang Wang’s vegetable garden destroyed on Monday when her landlord, Ōtautahi Community Housing Trust (ŌCHT), removed it without warning.

It said neighbours had raised concerns about the size of the garden and access to a washing line.

Wang had lovingly tended the garden at her Addington social housing unit for the past 10 years. She grew 14 kinds of vegetables and 13 varieties of rare Chinese herbs. One small patch of Chinese radish remains.

ŌCHT has “unreservedly apologised” for not telling Wang it planned to bring the digger in on Monday, but it stands by its decision to turn the garden into grass.

However, on Wednesday, ŌCHT tenancy operations manager Martin Pearce said the trust wanted to make things right and raised beds would be installed at the end of this week.
