Christchurch council removes 840 rubbish bins from parks, adds 100 'smart bins'

Nicole Mathewson Reporter from The Press

More than 200 Christchurch parks will be left without rubbish bins when the city council finishes removing 840 of them across the city.

About 100 “smart” bins will be installed instead, but 211 “low-use” neighbourhood parks will have their bins taken away and not returned.

More than 200 Christchurch parks will be left without rubbish bins when the city council finishes removing 840 of them across the city.

About 100 “smart” bins will be installed instead, but 211 “low-use” neighbourhood parks will have their bins taken away and not returned.

The smart bins are bigger and are equipped with sensor technology that provides the council’s maintenance contractor with daily information on how full each bin is.

Council head of parks Andrew Rutledge said the data meant the contractor only needed to send crews out to empty the bins when required, saving time and money.

In areas without bins, the council encouraged people to take any rubbish home with them, and put it in their red wheelie bin.

Employees of the Addington railway workshops pedal homeward on a cold July evening in
1946.

The workshops stood at what is now Tower Junction. They built, maintained and repaired railway stock and were a major employer in Christchurch.

The Christchurch terrain suited cycling and the city was known for its bikes. Few workers owned cars, so bikes and trams dominated city streets after the 5pm knock-off time.

The 40-hour week and eight-hour working day, introduced 10 years earlier but in general practice only from 1946, contributed to the 5 o'clock rush.

Use it or lose it - Your Local Pharmacy

Once our community pharmacies are gone they won't come back, leaving the market to the intruders - in this case Australian giants Chemist Warehouse and Countdown with their in-store pharmacies. The intruders don't charge the dispensing fee to lure customers in but they still have to pay it to the government. I know in many households money is tight and 5 Dollars can go a long way. But if you can - please continue to support our local pharmacists. I would hate to lose the knowledge many of these pharmacists have accumulated and I have saved many doctors visits by simply talking to our pharmacist. I go to Hei Hei pharmacy in Wycola Ave.

This year we are hoping to find someone that will come to the courts where we play and take out club team photo's. It could be any time on a Saturday from 8:15 (our very young FF teams and U12 team that play at this time) through to 2:30pm to have any of our age grade teams have their picts taken before they play at 3:05pm. I would know in advance the game times of all our other teams so over about 3-4 Saturdays we could potentially have all teams photo's taken. Hagley Park is looking really lovely with their trees and all the leaves on the ground and we would like something a little different this year for our club pic's. We are happy to pay for your time as long as it is reasonable. If you are interested and keen, please email the club at hornby.netball@gmail.com and we will get back in touch with you.
