Hi neighbours,

Luxury cat breeders say Covid-19 has pushed demand for high-priced kittens to unprecedented levels.

The Maine Coon –one of the country’s most expensive breeds at $2,500 a cat – soared in demand during the Covid-19 lockdown last March.

Enquiries for the “gentle giant” cats increased from 15 to 20 per week to about 20 per day, as Kiwis increasingly searched for ways to spend their money and time around home, one breeder said.

Do you own an expensive cat breed? Let us know below. Pics welcome!

Dear neighbours,

Please meet Alyce Read of Nelson, who uses her houseplant collection to connect with others and help them overcome mental health challenges. "You wouldn’t take a plant and put it in a dark corner and fail to water it and expect it to thrive. So we should look at ourselves that way," she says. "If we are not thriving in the way that we would wish, it might not be any fault of ours, it might be the conditions that we are under."

All it takes is a kind gesture to change someone’s day. From giving flowers to a neighbour ‘just because’ to paying it forward in line at a cafe - this month we’re encouraging our members and supporters to make New Zealand a better place one random act of kindness at a time.

The options for doing so are endless! Being kind doesn’t have to cost a thing, after all a smile is free. For those who want to go the extra mile, here’s some other ideas: take a gift over to new neighbours and introduce yourself, build a free community library for your street, buy extra kai at the grocery store to donate to a food bank, bring treats into work for colleagues, send an encouraging text to someone who needs it, let a car into the traffic ahead of you, write positive messages in chalk on sidewalks around your neighbourhood, or surprise loved ones with a visit.

Want to share your thoughts? Let us know how you’re spreading kindness this month by tagging us in your social media posts or emailing us your photos, videos, or experiences to:

Hey neighbours,

Work to convert Christchurch’s heritage-listed Old Post Office building into a multi-use hospitality space is taking shape.

The Press was given a sneak peek inside The Grand, which will occupy the two-storey building in Cathedral Square, plus a large outdoor section. It is scheduled to open in December.

The space includes a restaurant, café and bars, an i-Site visitor information centre, artisan bakery, pâtisserie, florist and gift store, and a South Island food tasting experience promoting local wine, beer, cheese and meat.

Did you visit the old post office before the quakes? And will you visit this new offering once it's ready?

More pictures available in the story by clicking 'Read More' below. Please note the attached image was taken shortly after the 2011 quakes.

Grace Prendergast and Kerri Gowler were hot favourites to win the women's pair final after setting the world’s fastest time in the semi-final in Tokyo on Wednesday.

But the odds did nothing to ease Sally Prendergast's nerves going into Thursday's final.

She conceded she “didn’t even watch the end”.

Sally Prendergast told Stuff she was "wide awake" overnight with excitement and nerves, but said the family was confident in the pair's ability.

Grace Prendergast, who was born in Christchurch in 1992, began rowing for Villa Maria College out of Avon Rowing Club in Christchurch in 2007.
