Does Christchurch have enough public toilets, and is it easy enough to get around?

Hi neighbours, despite billions of dollars being spent and years of rebuilding since the earthquakes, some experts say the structure of the city could still better serve people’s wellbeing.

Public health doctor Anna Stevenson believes one of the main problems is accessibility.

“If you want to get from one part of the city to the other part, if you’re a fully able-bodied person with courage and the wind behind you, you can usually manage," she says. "But if you have a pushchair and have small children or a wheelchair … you would actually find it very difficult to navigate the city safely.”

Public toilets and water fountains are scarce too, she claims.

The future of Christchurch’s housing intensification plan now sits with the new environment minister.

The Christchurch City Council decided on Wednesday to ask Environment Minister Penny Simmonds to pause the $4.2 million independent hearings process, which is considering housing density rules imposed by the former Government.
Due to existing laws the council can not make the decision itself.

The intensification plan being considered allows three residential buildings of three storeys each to be built, without a resource consent, across vast parts of the city. It also allows for higher limits in main suburban centres.

The plan, which has garnered strong opposition from residents’ groups, provides enough space for housing for the next 150 years.
But the new Government has said it would make the density standards optional for councils.

We just wanted to thank all our amazing volunteers we have had this year, knitters, sewers and crocheters.

Many of you are older survivors who I call "warriors " as you havd been so brave to share your journey and how you were made to feel ashamed many years ago for asking for help and now feel like you're healing by volunteering for the young ones who were just like you at the same age.

We would love your support to vote for our lovely tree which is up in The Crossing called THE HEALING TREE it has all been made by volunteers including the tree itself.
We also are selling wildflower seed bombs packs for a fundraiser for $18 .( great teacher or Secret Santa gifts),.Single Serve Xmas Cakes ($7 &$8gf) and truffles. I will post these in another post but please support us this xmas to support youth affected by sexual harm.

Just a wee reminder we are NOT a foodbank that MSD keeps telling people we are, we done have food, and we don't take referrals from the public.

Have a lovely Xmas and thanks for your support 😀

Diana Isaac Village resident Maria has a love story for the ages, being flown on a ‘Bride Flight’ by her beloved Peter from their home country of the Netherlands to New Zealand as part of an international air race.

In 1953 a London to Christchurch challenge was organised. The reward for first place (in what was then the world’s longest air race – of 19,756 kilometres) was mainly glory but also a Harewood Gold Cup, named after Christchurch Airport’s operating name in the 1950s.

Competing airlines, amongst the eight airlines, included the Netherlands’ KLM Royal Dutch Airlines Douglas DC-6A, on which Maria travelled. There was also a BEA Vicker Viscount 700 and the RNZAF’s Hadley Page Hastings.

🌱 Greetings, Neighbours of Christchurch! 🌿

We're excited to share with you the incredible journey of Ōtākaro Orchard, a vibrant urban farm and community hub right here in our midst. As part of the Food Resilience Network, Ōtākaro Orchard is not just a green space but a thriving ecosystem dedicated to promoting local food, education, and sustainability.

What is Ōtākaro Orchard?
At its core, Ōtākaro Orchard is a community-led initiative situated at the heart of our city. Our mission is simple yet profound — to cultivate a space that fosters local food resilience, intergenerational learning, and environmental awareness. It all began in 2017 with a successful PledgeMe campaign followed by a second in 2023, and since then, our orchard has grown into a garden with a food forest, herb and vegetable beds, and in the future an open-air amphitheater for gatherings.

The Information Centre and Café: A Hub for Growth
Now, we're on the brink of something exciting! The Ōtākaro Orchard Information Centre and Café are nearing completion, thanks to the incredible support of our community. This space will be a dynamic hub for educational workshops, local businesses, and gatherings. Picture a green roof, solar panels, compost toilets, and a café along Cambridge Terrace.

The Blue-Green Roof: A Global Innovation
We're currently installing a pioneering blue-green roof, integrating solar panels and a diverse array of plants. This groundbreaking feature is not only one of the first in Aotearoa but stands as a global innovation. It's a living testament to our commitment to sustainability and showcases the potential of urban spaces to harmonize with nature.

How Can You Get Involved?
Our journey wouldn't be complete without our amazing neighbors. We invite you to join us in this exciting venture! Whether you're a seasoned gardener, a sustainability enthusiast, or simply curious, there's a place for you at Ōtākaro Orchard. Keep an eye out for events, workshops, and opportunities to get hands-on with the urban farm.

Let's cultivate a greener, more resilient community together! 🌿

Cheers,
The Ōtākaro Orchard Team 🍏🍇🌞
