Solo dad Raymond was shaking when he first took his two children to stay at Cholmondeley Children's Centre in Christchurch.
But with no family support, he needed help.

It has been more than two years and his two children – Renee, 9, and Dray, 8 – stay at the respite centre for five nights every six weeks.

More than 500 children stay at the largely community-funded Governors Bay centre each year, an unprecedented increase from less than 200 in 2011, which chief executive said could be indicative of the "increasing gap between the rich and the poor".

New Zealanders need to almost halve their number of car trips to satisfactorily improve our health and wellbeing, a new report claims.

The University of Otago report, Turning the Tide - from Cars to Active Transport, has recommended the Government put targets and legislation in place to reduce car use in urban centres from 84 per cent of trips to 45 per cent by 2050.

The report claims two-thirds of car trips made for commuting between 2015 and 2017 were within a comfortable cycling distance (five kilometres or less), while one-third were within a reasonable walking distance (2km or less).

An award-winning Kiwi author is teaming up with the Life Education Trust and technology company Cisco to help Christchurch children deal with anxiety, build resilience and practice empathy.

Avril McDonald is sharing her Feel Brave stories and strategies with five local schools this week, including Riccarton Primary School, pictured below.

Life Education chief executive John O'Connell said many young people in Christchurch had experienced significant trauma, firstly with the earthquakes and more recently with the March 15 terror attack that forced schools across the city to go into lockdown.

"It doesn't compare to my experience growing up in Christchurch, or anywhere in New Zealand for that matter."

Every child needed support to help build resilience to deal with adveristy in their lives, he said.

Five storey-telling videos showing powerful coping strategies would be produced from McDonald's visit in Christchurch and shared with children around New Zealand and the world.

‘The children are our future.’ It’s a well-loved cliché around the world because it’s absolutely true. The hopes and dreams we have for our communities are only as strong as the children and young people who continue to believe in them long after we’re gone.

This month is all about supporting our young people, to encourage and empower them to not only be the change-makers and community builders of tomorrow but also the best versions of themselves. To listen to their perspective and remember that it’s not just about what we can teach them, but what lessons they can teach us. After all, the recipe for creating healthy, happy children includes a lot of the same ingredients for building safer, more resilient and connected communities.

Want to share your thoughts?

Let us know how you’re supporting young people in your communities this month by tagging us in your posts + using the following hashtag so we can see what you get up to:
