This section of the pier column was put under the most stress during the earthquakes, and the damage to the outer concrete and reinforcement has made it more vulnerable to rust and partially reduced its structural strength.
Investigations so far indicate that all the columns have this sort of damage, and over the next year the Council will be heading below sea-level to install new steel and concrete jackets to restore their strength and durability.
New Brighton Pier remains safe to use and is open to the public.
