This can include reporting and removing … View moreKeep Christchurch Beautiful is a local branch of Keep New Zealand Beautiful, and has been working in and around Christchurch since the 1980s. Initially and mostly in the litter abatement area, but also in general beautification of our physical environment. This can include reporting and removing graffiti; collaborating with schools and groups to paint murals on Chorus street side utility cabinets (to prevent graffiti); running our very successful schools environment programme (in its 27th year in 2020) which reaches around 40 schools a year; working with other environmental groups, individuals and community groups to carry out clean up and other environment enhancement events around the city; supporting and recognising volunteers who work regularly picking up rubbish, planting, caring for local parks, reserves and gardens, develop and maintain new native plantings in reserves; and also recognising those businesses that themselves support volunteers or have business practices that are environmentally sustainable.
KCB promotes and supports projects initiated by Keep New Zealand Beautiful, our parent organisation (while KCB is a branch, it is also independent and a stand-alone charity and incorporated society). KCB is also developing new projects, including scaling the schools programme to suits preschools; maintaining a ‘library’ of gear to lend and sometimes gift, to groups doing clean ups; and providing event coordination and management for business groups wanting to ‘give back’ to their communities with clean up events.
KCB is proud of its connections with other groups around the city; together we are more than the sum of our parts.

A large health facility with procedure rooms and luxury recovery suites is proposed for a prominent site in Christchurch's health precinct.
The application proposes two levels of medical facilities and three levels of guest accommodation “proposed to function as luxury recovery rooms” for procedures done on the lower floors.
Huadu International NZ chief executive Aaron Boddington said the company was excited to develop the project, but declined to answer questions on when the facility would be built, who would operate it and how much it would cost.

The fire has been burning since about 11.25am on Sunday after flaring up on a Twizel riverbed and spreading to a large forest on Mt Cook Rd (State Highway 80).

The fire has been burning since about 11.25am on Sunday after flaring up on a Twizel riverbed and spreading to a large forest on Mt Cook Rd (State Highway 80).
It grew to 2500 hectares and had a 23 kilometre perimeter by Sunday night but on Monday, there was "significant spread" overnight and it was now covering 3100 hectares.
There are 17 helicopters and two fixed-wing aircraft battling the fire, with the first helicopters equipped with monsoon buckets going up at first light.
State-of-the-art sorting equipment will be installed at Christchurch’s recycling plant thanks to a multi-million dollar grant from the Government.
The upgrade will make it easier to remove contaminants from recycling and sort plastics into individual types.

Gone are the days of sitting depressed in my flat, unable to function when all I could do was sit and eat, frozen with fear.
I am amazed how some days seem so light and easy. Then that energy disappears and the next moment or 24 hours seem dark and heavy. I’m pleased to report that today was light and easy. Since earlier in the week, I put off writing an email, assessing paperwork, updating documents, finding suitable accommodation for a visiting friend and changing the bed linen! But today, I completed all those tasks with a sense of joy, lightness and ease. I paused throughout each activity and thanked whatever power there is in the universe for that energy and the ease of getting through the tasks effortlessly. The motto, “less effort, maximum benefit” that I heard recently sounded in my heart.
This morning helped me realise the old adage, “this too shall pass!” and the complete practical sense of other slogans I’ve learned in the programme. Another example is, “don’t take yourself too seriously!” I’m appreciating how everything ebbs and flows; one’s energy, the moonlight, the tide on the beach rise and fall, like the sun.
I’m in awe of how it’s possible for a hopeless addict, like me, to not eat addictively - even when some days I feel overwhelmed with chores, people and things, or a feeling of darkness surfaces (and it really is just a feeling). Thankfully, everything passes and, as I mature in sobriety, I really know with all my heart how to keep going.
