Businessman, property investor and accountant Laurie Rose’s adjoining quake-damaged buildings – two of the heritage Duncan’s buildings in lower High St – were demolished in 2017.

The property now contains building debris including pieces of metal, broken concrete and bricks, plus 2 metre-high weeds behind chain-link fencing. Rose said he was sympathetic to the neighbours’ concerns, but was stuck in an insurance battle and would not spend any money on the site in the meantime - despite neighbours offering to help him clean the site up.

Do you think more should be done to get owners of vacant sites to tidy them up and/or develop them? Read the full story here and tell us your thoughts in the comments below.

Ally Swann is determined that health complications won’t keep her from completing her third consecutive The Press Run To Remember next month.

The 36-year-old first took part in the event in 2019 with her golden retriever Minnie, and improved on her time the following year despite enduring long-standing struggles with liver and bowel disease.

This year she comes prepared with a game plan and a goal – to once again beat her previous time in the 10-kilometre walk and run though the Port Hills on February 21, created to honour the lives lost in the Canterbury earthquakes.

Hi Folks,
We are a 4-part non-auditioned friendly community choir of approximately 25 members.
We are now looking for new members, especially Tenors, but all of whom are always made very welcome. Although it is not essential to be able to read music, if you can sing in tune, you would still be most welcome to join us, as you would soon learn the music via our very helpful conductor.

We perform two or three concerts a year, and our music mostly consists of popular pieces from movies, shows, hit records, etc., all of which we really enjoy singing. We also take part each year in the annual Choral Festival held at St Mary’s Pro-Cathedral, with various other choirs taking part as well. Always a popular event.

We rehearse every Monday evening, with a short break in between, from 7.30-9.30, at the Risingholme Theatre, which can be reached via the driveway at 99 Hawford Road, Opawa (green advertising board on fence) or, via the opening into Risingholme Park at the end of Reeves Road.

We begin our first rehearsal for this year on the Monday evening of 15th February, and if you would like to come along to our rehearsal please feel free to do so. The members are all looking forward to getting back, and I’m sure, to be in the company of the other members, for a good chat before the rehearsal starts!

For any questions you may have about the choir, please contact our President, Jill Willmott, on 388 3235 or, at risingholmesingers@gmail.com

Jimmy Royal got so fed up with the vandalised eyesore next door that he bought the building.

Royal is the new owner of Malvern House on Hereford St in central Christchurch. The quake-damaged office building is on the city council’s “Dirty 30” list of sites seen as barriers to the rebuild, and in a location compared by one property owner to a war zone.

Malvern House has sat vacant and deteriorating since the quakes. It has attracted squatters and damage including broken windows, plus the label of the city’s most tagged building.

Its sale could help revitalise the dilapidated strip, where neighbours say their improvement efforts have been thwarted by Malvern House’s condition.
