February 22 will mark the 10th anniversary of the Christchurch Earthquakes.

With uncertainties surrounding commemorations due to recent Covid-19 restrictions, the Christchurch City Council will live stream the event so that people worldwide will have to opportunity to pay their respects.

The council has worked closely with the Quakes Families Trust to create a memorial service that will acknowledge and commemorate those that lost their lives and all that have endured hardship due to the disaster.

“We want people, no matter where they are in the world, to feel part of the commemorations so we will be live-streaming both the national memorial service on 22 February and the free concert – Ōtautahi Together – on 28 February,” says Christchurch City Council Civic and International Relations Manager Matt Nichols.

185 Cantabrians lost their lives when a magnitude 6.2 earthquake struck at a depth of 5km near south-east Christchurch in 2011.

Share your messages of support below and don't forget to type NFP if you don't want your comment featured in the Northern Outlook.

This year's event runs from March 20 - 30th with the theme being 'The Great Plant Swap' as an easy way for neighbourhoods to grow stronger together.

Here's some ideas for ways you could get involved:

• swap seeds with a neighbour
• gift a plant you've grown to a neighbour
• take some flowers to a neighbour
• organise a produce swap
• share garden tips or recipes for food in season
• create community gardens or berm pollinator pathways
• host an inclusive garden-themed working bee
• a friendly neighbourhood BBQ with homegrown ingredients

The options are endless! At the end of the day, our shared aim is to help bring people together by encouraging intentional connection with our neighbours. Whether that be organising a street party, sharing a cuppa, or simply saying ‘Kia Ora!” to those who live around you, every action helps to create a safer and more connected New Zealand.

Bumblebee ride

Keith from Avonside - Dallington

Went for a ride because I can. Headed towards the sea, taking as many tracks as I came across them. Hoping from one to another, ended up going round the eatery to bridge St and the track was closed.

Re: replies to Vernon & myself, I like your normally considered remarks and will continue to read, but there are times when even the best of us inadvertently shoot ourselves in the walking things. Though merely having what I hope is a 'commonsense education' I deemed it only fair to be of help when even "scientific education" can slip a little .. as is well known.  Maybe a reread of the  "Covid Updates" post (from the bottom up) could help perspective a little. Not being a jibe at our leader at all (probably misrepresented incorrectly by advisors) .. again ? .. hmmm.  Now just to clear up my initial comment which you seem to take abeyance with, it was not (though possibly could/should?. have been, non ?) a personal attack, merely an old joke that began being used on car salesmen .. (oops, and women), realtors, insurance salespeople, lawyers, etc.  Oops again … AND politicians,of course .. no matter their ilk, haha !  Please don't take this as an apology mate, just .. ah .. commonsense, and in case you didn't know the answer :-- "their lips move "  .. cheers …. but remember, " I may not agree, but I will defend ……. etc,etc

Christchurch International Airport is not doing daily Covid-19 saliva tests for its border staff – unlike Auckland Airport, which is privately funding a saliva testing pilot.

Airport boss Malcolm Johns said it was not a financial issue, but it was unnecessary as almost all international travellers were arriving via Auckland. The bigger risk in Christchurch was at managed isolation and quarantine (MIQ) facilities.

Do you think saliva testing should be offered to Christchurch border staff?
