New smart ultrasonic water meters will be installed in about 1200 east Christchurch homes over the next six months.

The meters can send information about water use back to the council directly, which means staff will no longer need to visit a home to get a reading.

The new meters, which the council intends to eventually install across the city, also collect more data about water use and can provide readings over the course of the day.

The first installations in east Christchurch come as the city approaches its last summer before the introduction of an excess water use charge.

From July 2022, households using more than an average of 700 litres of water a day over a three-month period will be stung by the new charge. The average Christchurch household uses 540 litres per day. Continue reading here.

Nearly all my messages re the antagonist amongst us have been removed.
As usual they have failed to give any insight as to why....
and I suspect will refuse to clarify as they always do.

There was NOTHING in the messages that I consider to be a problem and the fact many of my messages had many likes would tend to suggest others agree.

The moderation on this site a a joke....

I was attempting to have a robust conversation (within the guidelines) but the powers that be seem intent on silencing anyone you says anything except nice weather and how's your knitting.

Talk about absolutely pathetic.

Sunday (September 26) marks the beginning of daylight saving and is the day for testing of Christchurch's coastal tsunami sirens.

People near the coast should expect to hear tsunami sirens sounds for up to two minutes at 11am on Sunday.

“People shouldn’t be alarmed to hear the sirens going off and don’t need to evacuate," Christchurch City Council
acting head of Civil Defence and Emergency Management Rebecca Newton says.

"The testing of the sirens though is a good reminder to people in coastal and riverside areas that they should have an evacuation plan in place so that everyone in the family knows what to do and where to go if there is a tsunami evacuation.

“While we are likely to get advanced warning of a distance-source tsunami triggered by a large earthquake overseas, if a tsunami is triggered by a very large earthquake closer to New Zealand people may need to evacuate quickly so they should have an emergency bag at the ready."

In the event of a local or regional source tsunami, there may not be enough time to activate the warning sirens. In those circumstances, the most important warning is the earthquake itself, which is why people are encouraged to adhere to the national tsunami message – ‘Long or strong, get gone’, Newton says.

People can check Christchurch City Council's interactive online map to find out if by they live or work in a tsunami evacuation zone.

Happy Tuesday neighbours,

When 80-year-old Barry Souter landed his first job in a clothing store 64 years ago, the retail industry looked a lot different.

Customers were not able to browse the shelves but had to ask for clothes to be brought out from behind the counter. When a sale was made, Souter had to handwrite the sale docket. And stock-taking was very much a manual task.

But through all the changes, Souter has never stopped having fun. “It’s the people that make it. Human interaction is what keeps us all going.”

Souter’s first job was at Hallensteins in Dunedin when he was 16, and he worked for Munns in Christchurch for a long time before opening his own business in Bishopdale nearly a decade ago.
