TIPS

(Those old telephone books you have stored in case 1995 - 2010 ever come back, or whatever excuse you still have them would be ideal). Our older parents appreciate their food to be fed to them so that they don't have to bend down (it restricts their food passage). So do our older felines.
2 Have difficulty turning door handles (arthritic maybe) or even when both hands are full and the door is shut - try using a couple of layers of masking tape (or duct tape)to cover the slot - it is much easier to pull and much easier to push the door without having to twist the handles as well.
It goes without saying (so often should be said?) - this tip doesn't apply to sliding doors or front or back doors - don't want to make it easier for the light finger brigade do we ?/?. Cheers all and stay safe.

With the current restrictions we aren’t able to print or distribute at the moment, but we are working hard on a fantastic May issue for you and it will be on sale as soon as the restrictions ease! I am hearing from so many readers right now about how their gardens have never been more important to them than they are now, so I want to ensure you get your NZ Gardener, packed with beautiful pictures, expert advice, inspiration and information as quickly as possible, so you can enjoy your own garden even more. Meanwhile, when you do your next shop, we’d love it if you could pick up a copy of the April issue which is on sale now (you can add a copy to your online shop too). As you’ve probably heard on the news it is a tough time for magazines right now, and we are incredibly grateful for the support of our regular readers and (especially!) our subscribers. If you are in a position to subscribe, or share your own love of plants and gardening by buying a subscription as a gift for someone else, then we’d be incredibly grateful: mags4gifts.co.nz.... Stay safe and enjoy the extra time in your garden everyone! Jo

Christchurch's Lynette Hartley has created a colouring-in drawing for Kiwi kids to enjoy during the coronavirus lockdown.

"I thought an activity for children with a positive message about the current situation would be a good idea. This followed my (and everyone else's) experiences during the earthquakes," she said.

"I learnt that it is important to give children a way of feeling empowered that there is a solution to the situation (in this case the bears catching the Covid virus and giving it a damn good soapy wash)."

Lynette normally works as a tour guide for Nature Quest, taking people on tours around the North and South islands with nature-related themes such as birding, general nature, plants, or walking.

ShieldsUp is a volunteer driven initiative of over 500 Kiwis, 3D printing, manufacturing and distributing face shields to our medical and emergency heroes across the country facing Covid-19 head on.

Within two weeks, we have delivered over 5,000 face shields, but we are still hearing the calls of many. As the government and DHB’s publicly assure us that all necessary equipment is readily accessible, the demand for our face shields continues to grow daily, with requests for 30,000 shields.

If you would like to help us help them, sign up to volunteer at shieldsup.org.nz, or make a donation to ensure we can continue to produce and distribute our shields to protect our frontline heroes.

Hi everyone, I hope everyone is staying safe and well in their 'bubbles' during this uncertain time.
Our grandparents and for some of you, parents, endured uncertain and far more dangerous times during WW2. Rationing of everything, the' make do and mend' mantra that one was constantly reminded to do, 'dig for victory' where flower gardens and grass in parks and private gardens was given over to produce veggies. We are by no means at any of those stages where we dont have access to food, its just the getting it thats the problem for some. Which brings me to my point, one which i struggle with personally but its in the best interests of everyone and that is trading, swapping, gifting , whatever you like to call it, of excess fruit and veggies, toys, puzzles, etc etc. While its a lovely kind thought to share with others, it also brings about the possibility of sharing the very thing we're trying to eliminate, the virus. We have been told to socially distance ourselves from others , to sanitise, wash our hands, practice good cough and sneeze etiquette. If we fail to isolate to minimise the transference of this virus we will be in lockdown for longer. So please, please please, stay at home in safety with your families, dont go out to pick up items from others, dont put essential service personnel in danger by having an accident while you're out and about because youre desperate for ping-pong balls or veggie seedlings. Those things can wait. Order online. There are many more websites that are opening up to provide essential items. Phone those who dont have the internet and place an order for what they need for them perhaps. Go home, stay home and do your bit by helping everyone else stay safe too. Together we can all beat this!

Please folks if you have any sewing or craft related stashes as a result of sorting cupboards and drawers please consider donating it to a local Op Shop or similar. Any queries please do not hesitate to PM me. I am currently making face masks and I know that some of the things ending up at the dump could be really useful to us sewers, quilters and crafters. Op Shops can't receive goods presently but that will end soon. Thank you neighbours and stay safe, kia kaha. (I have my fingers crossed that this does not appear twice).
