Central city retailers are urging the Christchurch City Council to extend its free inner city parking scheme, saying their new retail precinct needs help to compete with malls, especially with the arrival of winter.

The call comes after more than 380 people wrote submissions to the council urging it to extend the one-hour free parking at the Lichfield St and Art Gallery car parks beyond June 30. Another 95 are against it and about 30 have some concerns.

Road closure in Addington, Queen’s Birthday Weekend

Whiteleigh Avenue in Addington will be closed for a critical railway upgrade from 6:00am Saturday 2 June to 6:00am Tuesday 5 June. KiwiRail has contracted Fulton Hogan to carry out 24 hour work.

Motorists are asked to avoid Addington and detour through Curletts Road where possible. Further … View more
