Hey neighbours,

Every night Gary Bridgman’s Christchurch home is lit up like a sports stadium.

The Fendalton resident blames new LED streetlights installed on the street outside, and says complaints to the city council about an “unbelievable” glare coming through his windows have gone unresolved for weeks.

The two lights either side of the house produce a whiter light than their predecessors, Bridgman says, causing the house to be “lit up like it’s floodlit” at night. He has seen other LED streetlights in his area that are “very good”.

Council says the complaints are being investigated and the contractor has been asked to provide a solution.

One expert said it was hard to find a Canterbury river where at least one indicator was not degrading, but improving quality was a long-term game and people need to keep their eye on the ball.

In the lead up to the 2020 election, Stuff is keeping voters up to date with what’s happening in their electorate, through Neighbourly. Here’s what you need to know about the candidates in the running to be Wigram's MP.

At the October 17 election, New Zealanders will have the opportunity to choose their regional spokesperson.

Through the Mixed Member Proportional (MMP) voting system, those enrolled can vote for the party they want as well as a local representative.

Why does my MP matter?

The person elected will be the voice for your region in Parliament. If you’re having trouble getting entitlements or dealing with Government departments, they can help. If your community needs funding for certain projects or activities, or there isn’t enough healthcare in the area, the elected MP can step in and help.

The well-known former Hornby Clocktower site is for sale.

On the corner of Main South Rd and Brynley St, the property is the site of the former Hornby Clocktower building that marked the southern entrance to Christchurch for more than 50 years.

It was built by accomplished Christchurch architect Don Donnithorne in the 1960s, who was part of a new school of architects who dominated Christchurch's post-war cityscape with clean, modernist designs, and was home to the Central Canterbury Electric Power Board.

Family-owned investment company Epoch bought the property in 2005. They completed a full refurbishment in 2010, just three months before the February 2011 earthquake. The building was demolished in 2014.

Epoch has redeveloped the site into a mixed-use complex, naming it the Clocktower Centre in a nod to the past.

It comprises four main buildings with a total of 11 tenancies including fast food chain Carl’s Jr, Snap Fitness, Australian retailer Godfreys, Oil Changers and a host of other businesses.
