We want to help create an environmentally conscious and supportive community, so every two years Lincoln Envirotown with support from Selwyn District Council, holds the Responsible Business Awards and the Responsible Education Awards to reward the amazing work that’s already being done in the Selwyn District.

The awards help encourage businesses and schools to make their practices as environmentally and socially responsible as possible. They also provide a perfect opportunity to get support and advice on how to improve the practices of schools and businesses.

Any school or business in Selwyn can enter the awards, and we will visit the site to ask about its operations. We provide detailed feedback and ongoing support for making businesses more sustainable, and at the end of October we host an enjoyable awards evening to bring the community together to celebrate the successes of the winners in each category.

Please encourage your favourite local businesses to join in, we’d love to reward their efforts! If you run a business or school in Selwyn, we’re excited to hear from you. Contact: Siana Fitzjohn on 0225486143 or email rbacoordinator@gmail.com.

Christchurch’s mobile library service will stay open for now and the city council plans to spend another $11 million on climate change initiatives, but the news is not so good for the much-loved Wharenui Pool.

The Christchurch City Council announced on Wednesday it is proposing to lease the pool to the Wharenui Swim Club, but wants to stop funding the facility once the metro sports facility opens in 2022.

The move has been slammed by swim club president Chris Averill, who said the council was walking away from its commitments to the local community and the children of Wharenui School.

A new email scam impersonating the NZTA is being sent around telling vehicle owners their licences are due.

The email directs the recipient to renew the funds through clicking a 'Renew Now' button at the bottom corner of the email. It then takes the individual to fake website that gets them to fill in personal details.

CERT NZ, the government authority responsible for cyber security said in a tweet, that anyone who receives this email should report it directly to Waka Kotahi (NZTA).

How to spot a phishing scam:
- NZTA will only send an email through if an individual has contacted them first.
- Email addresses will always end in @nzta.govt.nz, @enews.nzta.govt.nz or @reply.nzta.govt.nz.
- The email may be missing specific details that the NZTA will have on file: such as your plate number, the date your vehicle license is due and vehicle make and model.
- Hover over buttons and links to see if the pop-up will take you to a genuine government (.govt.nz) website

Neighbourly will update this message as further information comes to hand.

Christchurch council removes 840 rubbish bins from parks, adds 100 'smart bins'

Nicole Mathewson Reporter from The Press

More than 200 Christchurch parks will be left without rubbish bins when the city council finishes removing 840 of them across the city.

About 100 “smart” bins will be installed instead, but 211 “low-use” neighbourhood parks will have their bins taken away and not returned.

More than 200 Christchurch parks will be left without rubbish bins when the city council finishes removing 840 of them across the city.

About 100 “smart” bins will be installed instead, but 211 “low-use” neighbourhood parks will have their bins taken away and not returned.

The smart bins are bigger and are equipped with sensor technology that provides the council’s maintenance contractor with daily information on how full each bin is.

Council head of parks Andrew Rutledge said the data meant the contractor only needed to send crews out to empty the bins when required, saving time and money.

In areas without bins, the council encouraged people to take any rubbish home with them, and put it in their red wheelie bin.
