After his brother and partner in the family construction business died by suspected suicide, Chris Hughes wasn't sure what to tell his staff.

The construction sector has one of the highest suicide rates of any sector in New Zealand. Hughes says asking for help went against macho and "tough guy" attitudes in the industry.

He wants to know how we change that.

Crown rebuild company Ōtākaro will manage the build of the 32-metre bridge that runs between Cambridge and Oxford terraces, near the Margaret Mahy playground.

The bridge replaces a proposal for a $5.92m "art bridge" for the site. Ōtākaro previously ran a competition calling for professionals to enter design ideas for the bridge, which received 13 entries.

This month we’re celebrating the diverse array of people who call New Zealand home. Regardless of our different faiths, abilities, cultures, nationalities, ages, orientations and even genders - we want to make sure that our communities are safe and welcoming for all.

There’s many ways to take part! From hosting a multicultural potluck where each attendee brings a dish from a country of their choice to coordinating a fundraiser that benefits refugees or our elderly there are thousands of ways big and small to make our households, neighbourhoods, schools and businesses even more inclusive. It could even be as simple as learning from a neighbour how to say ‘hello’ in their native language or ensuring local footpaths are accessible!

Don’t forget this month also coincides with Women’s Refugee Awareness Month and International Day of Friendship on July 30th - a United Nations day that promotes the role that friendship plays in promoting peace in many cultures.

Want to share your thoughts? Let us know how you’re making your community more inclusive this month by tagging us in your posts + using the following hashtag so we can see what you get up to:

I have a sick bunny and am desperately needing to make some money to help pay for his treatment. I’m only working 4 days a week at the moment and He’s already hit over $500 in vet bills. We’re about to rack up roughly another $300+ next week when he goes for another lot of xrays etc to see if the antibiotics are working to shrink a 7cm abscess in his belly.

I can’t really help with garden stuff as I’m allergic to grass but I can help out with dishes, cleaning, cooking meals, walking dogs, I can wash your car etc if anyone needs a hand? I’m just desperate to make sure he gets the treatment he needs.
