Clean recycling!

The Team from Christchurch City Council

Keep it clean!
Remember to give your bottles and containers a good rinse before putting them in the yellow bin. Food and drink residue can contaminate recyclable material and make the job really unpleasant for our recycling operators.

White and Yellow Pages Telephone directory - don't ignore the letter!

Karen from Ilam

I recently got a letter from "yellow" - the folk that distribute the phone directories.

It looks like a form letter BUT buried in the middle paragraph is the information that residential listings will be in a separate Christchurch White Pages Residential book (available on order).

I recently got a letter from "yellow" - the folk that distribute the phone directories.

It looks like a form letter BUT buried in the middle paragraph is the information that residential listings will be in a separate Christchurch White Pages Residential book (available on order).

"Well!" I thought, "that probably means we are going to have to pay for it now!"

But NO! it is still FREE! - as the "yellow" lady explained on the phone when I called.

However you do have to "OPT IN" to get it - you can call them on 0800 803 803 to do this.

I think they are hoping that not many people will do that so they don't have to print many copies which will save some costs and trees (or perhaps so that they can say that too few people "opted in" to make it worthwhile producing).

I know that lots of people use online directories etc now but not everyone has a computer or smart phone and some still find the white pages useful, so this is a warning - if you want the white pages, DON'T ignore the letter - contact "yellow" to opt in (and tell those who may not be on "neighbourly" about this too)!

Are you recycling right?

The Team from Christchurch City Council

Keep it topless!
Did you know lids and bottle tops are often made from a variety of materials that may contaminate the recycling? So put them in the red bin before recycling your bottles and containers.

Seven years worth of speeding fines issued on a Christchurch road could be deemed invalid after police ticketed drivers based on the wrong speed limit.

The 50kmh speed limit on Port Hills Rd, from Garlands Rd to the Tunnel Rd intersection, was legally changed to 60kmh by the NZ Transport Agency in March 2011, but the signs were never changed so police have been ticketing people based on a 50kmh limit.

How will you be celebrating National Volunteer Week next month?

National Volunteer Week (17-23 of June 2018)
celebrates the 1.2 million Kiwis who are volunteering their time and skills to our communities every year.

The theme this year is Volunteers, The Heart of our Community – By many, the work will be completed, Mā tini, mā mano, ka rapa te whai.

We think this captures the essence of what volunteering is about. This is a time to acknowledge how volunteering efforts contribute to and enrich all communities within Aotearoa.
