Nationalising of our drinking water

I don't know about you but I am very concerned about the legislation in parliament at the moment to nationalise our drinking water. My understanding of this is that our water will be managed at national level, not at a local level like it is at the moment with the council managing it. Also there is a organisation called Water NZ who want to chlorinate all the drinking water in NZ including Canterbury's beautiful artesian water. For goodness sake a Chinese company is stealing millions of litres of our water here in Christchurch every day! And yet there is a call to permanently chlorinate our water. I know Christchurch people are fierce about our beautiful water. I know some areas are still chlorinated but this was only a temporary measure. Not a popular one though! But this people ... this will be permanent. I'm not sure when we will know the outcome of this legislation being passed. Someone out there might know how the whole political process works.
As a collective of people in this great city we need to come together and oppose this. I think we need to come up with a plan to make our feelings known to our local MPs, ask the CCC what they are doing to oppose this plan and whatever other ideas you have, maybe a petition? I think a city-wide rally would be great too. So I'm putting it out there. I am happy to meet with a motivate bunch of people to make this known to everyone who lives in Christchurch and surrounding areas and to start making some serious noise about our concerns. Let's put our collective heads together.
I don't want this to become a moaning session. I want this to be a productive online chat about where to next and suggestions of timing of things.
Regards
Fiona

Hi neighbours,

Have you always wanted to scooter to work? Now is your chance!

About 400 electric scooters (e-scooters) have been launched in Christchurch by California-based company Lime. The scooters can travel at speeds of up to 27kmh and have a maximum range of 48km. But not everyone is impressed, with some calling labeling the scooters as a "menace on footpaths". To read more about them, click here.

What are your thoughts on them? Will you give them a go? Will it be cheaper for you to scooter to work rather than drive and pay for parking? Or do you think they're a hazard for pedestrians? Share you thoughts with us in the replies below!

Stay safe out there this Labour Day Weekend! Any death on our roads is too many. We're committed to reducing death and injury on our roads. But we cannot do it alone, we need everyone’s help to keep our roads safe.

Note on speed threshold: Over the holiday period – 4pm on Friday 19 October to 6am on Tuesday 23 October 2018 – if you're detected by a safe speed camera exceeding the posted speed limit by more than 4 km/h, you are highly likely to be ticketed.

Be patient and considerate, don’t attempt to overtake other traffic unless it’s completely safe to do so. Share the driving if you can. If you can’t and you’re tired, distracted, or feeling fed up, pull over and take a break.

We’ll be out on the roads this weekend targeting known hot spots and risky behaviours such as speed enforcement, drug and alcohol testing, cell phone use, and seat belt checks. We know these are the four main behaviours which contribute to death and serious injury on our roads.

The public can free phone *555 from any mobile, using a hands free kit if you’re driving, to report any non-life threatening road incidents such as erratic driving, non-injury crashes, traffic congestion, breakdowns and obstructions to the highway. In an emergency always call emergency services on 111.

Graduates of Ara Institute of Canterbury’s sustainability and outdoor education programmes really ‘walk the talk’. With sustainability such an integral part of their studies, they’re naturally motivated to put sustainability into action, wherever they can.

Recent graduate Timea Kovacs encouraged local tourism company Christchurch Sea Kayaking to sign up to Tourism Industry Aotearoa’s new sustainability initiative. Now, staff at the kayaking business collect rubbish as they move through the water and clients naturally join in. “We need more businesses, especially tour operators, to showcase this behaviour change,” says Timea.

Kia ora water-lovers!

Here are some tips to make sure you and your loved ones are well prepared and stay safe:

1. Check the marine weather forecast before you go out, it could save your life! 58% of boaties already check it. We want the other 42% to make it a habit. MetService New Zealand's Marine App makes it easy.

2. Tests your life jackets. Pull hard on the straps and see if any of them stretch or rip. Check all over for any existing tears in the straps and any cuts or punctures in the life jacket. If yes, do not use the life jacket, dispose of it, and replace it. Always check if it floats before putting them on. Keep in mind kapok life jackets should not be used as they can absorb water and sink, their cotton straps also easily rip! Burn them or bin them, but whatever you do - don't use or resell them.

3. For this year's Safer Boating Week, boaties are being reminded to “Prep, Check, Know” - prepare your boat, check your gear and know the rules before going on the water.

Let's put in the time and effort to make sure there are NO water related accidents or deaths this Labour Day long-weekend! Don't forget to look out for each other and report any concerns you have to local authorities.
