It's true that you agreed to a legally binding contract as soon as you drove into the parking lot. Thankfully, New Zealand law protects consumers from the exploitative clauses that corporates love to slip in the fine print.

Under contract law, parking companies can only claim for "the actual and reasonable costs they incurred". Charging $65 for a short overstay in an empty carpark is as far from reasonable as you can get.

Hundreds of thousands of inexpensive items that pass through the retail giant's checkouts every year, so it's only to be expected there will be recalls – Kmart even has a recalls page on its website, and there are 31 products on the list.

The $55 timber Occasional Chair is the latest casualty, although this is a withdrawal rather than a recall. We don't know the reason for its withdrawal, except Kmart says it is for "a potential quality issue". But what other products have been found wanting?

I'm clearing out my excess plants before the planting rush in spring. It's first in first served and items won't be held so be quick to get the best choices. New plants and bulbs added everyday and many more than shown. Please note that the plants will be smaller versions of the bigger ones shown. Many of the pots have multiple plants/bulbs yet still count as one plant so you get even more of a bargain.

For every three that you buy I'll give you a choice of two other free plants from a selection on the day you pick up. You therefore get 5 plants for $1 total.

North Island investors are turning their backs on higher prices in their home cities to snap up central Christchurch apartments.

The city has had a noticeable upswing in out-of-towners buying apartments and townhouses in the past few months.

"When average prices are $500,000 in Christchurch and $1 million in Auckland, you can certainly see the appeal," said Kelvin Davidson, senior economist for property analysis firm CoreLogic.

The controversial relocation of Christchurch's Citizens' War Memorial has received financial backing for a proposed move to Cranmer Square.

The Christchurch Earthquake Appeal Trust (CEAT), set up to administer post-earthquake donations, has confirmed it will "support" the removal of the 82-year-old cenotaph, which has stood alongside Christ Church Cathedral since 1937, if resource consent is approved.

Moving the 300-tonne cenotaph is estimated to cost up to $1.5 million, but CEAT secretary Neil Cooper would not say how much the trust would cover "as we've not made this figure public yet".
