Hi neighbours,

Emma Milburn and Dart have been a search and rescue tag team for nearly a decade.

But as bearded border collie Dart, 13, gets older, she soon faces retirement, bringing an end to the special career shared between her and her handler.

The pair have been through a lot together. Milburn did all of Dart’s search and rescue training herself, pretty much everyday for eight years straight. The time and dedication it took to train a dog to be operational in search and rescue tasks was often overlooked, Milburn said.

End in sight for Riccarton Rd roadworks, after five years and $49 million

More than five years after contractors first started ripping up Christchurch’s busy Riccarton Rd, the city council says no more work is planned along the 3.2-kilometre stretch.

Since September 2016, the council has spent about $49 million refurbishing and modernising the street, which stretches from Hagley Park to Church Corner.

The work has added bus and cycle lanes, made safety improvements to intersections, and replaced scores of old wastewater and water pipes that had reached the end of their usable life.

The final phase of work involves laying new pipes under a 1.7km stretch of Riccarton Rd between Matipo St and Hansons Lane.

The city council's infrastructure, planning and regulatory services general manager, Jane Davis, said this phase would be completed by the end of February.

It would take until the end of March to complete most projects in surrounding streets, she added.

“[After this], we do not have any roadworks or major maintenance planned for Riccarton Rd,” Davis said, though she pointed out that, as with any road, unplanned work could arise.

British singer-songwriter Yusuf Islam, better known as Cat Stevens, announced last year he was donating an electric-powered peace train to Christchurch.

He came up with the idea while in Christchurch following the March 2019 mosque attacks, when he travelled across the world to perform his classic hit Peace Train at the memorial service held just days after the attacks. He wanted the train to bring smiles to future generations.

The train, a reference to his 1971 hit of the same name, has four carriages to carry children and families and operates without tracks. It is expected to arrive in New Zealand soon, and will be officially unveiled as part of this year’s commemorations of the attacks.

However, the city council needs to find people to drive it and organise the volunteers.

Council parks, programmes and partnership manager Kate Russell said the council planned to run the train in South Hagley Park on the second Sunday of every month – except for the winter months of June, July and August – from 10am to 4pm.

“We’re looking for a group of willing volunteers to drive the train and to act as conductors for people wanting a ride.”

It also wanted someone to co-ordinate the volunteers, organise the roster and train schedule.

“If you love trains, enjoy being around children and are willing to commit to a minimum of three two-hour shifts a year, we would love to hear from you.”

Expressions of interest can be emailed to kate.russell@ccc.govt.nz
