Christchurch residents will be charged for excess water use from July, though no fines will be issued for the first year as people get used to the scheme.

The charge was one of many points discussed by the Christchurch City Council on Monday as it ratified and voted on final amendments to the city's 10-year budget, known formally as the long-term plan.

The council also decided not to decommission Wharenui Pool (though funding past 2022 remains unclear), and voted to give the Arts Centre a $5.5 million grant, keep the Riccarton bus lounge open, and retain the mobile library for now.

Although the council intended to start the excess water use charge next month, Cr Sara Templeton said no fines would be dished out the first year, to allow people to get used to the change.

Read more, including who will be affected by the new charge, here.

Hi neighbours,

Canterbury’s “highest risk route” will be under the spotlight as the public are asked to give their views on the road’s current speed limits.

Between 2011 and 2020, 75 people were killed or suffered serious injuries on the road between Christchurch and Akaroa.

Waka Kotahi New Zealand Transport Agency (NZTA) is now seeking feedback from communities on the Banks Peninsula and Christchurch to hear their views on what the speed limits should be.

Do you think the speed should be reduced along SH 75/73?

People can provide feedback by visiting the NZTA website or emailing chchtoakaroaspeeds@nzta.govt.nz.

Drop-in sessions will also take place at:

Te Hapua Halswell Centre, July 1, 3–6pm

Little River School, July 6, 3–6pm

Tai Tapu Hotel, July 6, 10am–1pm

The Gaiety Hall, Akaroa, July 10, 11am–2pm

Need Black Ginger

Alasdair from Phillipstown

Good wet evening, everyone.

I have read about Black Ginger, that is used in Thailand, for the treatment of weak blood, in men. I tried Funky Pumpkin; never heard of this item. Also Ken's Mart in Sydenham with the same results. Does anyone know offhand where this can be sourced from?

I have managed to get it to the stage where it will come up to me. I have put on a paper collar to see if i can find owners but it is quickly removed by puss. I will take it to vets to see if it has a microchip. Just wanted to check if anyone recognises it. We are in Redcliffs.

I am curious to know if those rebates and incentives would be enough to make you change from internal combustion to EV or Hybrid.
Personally, it doesn't offer anywhere enough for me to even consider. I believe their offer is pathetic and won't allow many to change because of the cost factors plus that type of vehicle is only in its infancy and there are many unknowns and limitations to be ironed out, let alone the extremely limited charging network.
I am sure one of the Press/Stuff journalists will put up a more comprehensive article.
