Hi neighbours, here's one to pull on the heart strings...

Teenage sweethearts who rekindled their romance after more than 50 years – and nearly 20,000 kilometres apart – are still waiting to reunite thanks to Covid-19.

Jock Anderson, 74, and Elizabeth Robertson, 73, were teenage sweethearts after attending Macandrew Intermediate School in Dunedin together in the 1960s.

The pair reignited their spark in 2019 after half a century apart when Anderson travelled to Scotland for a holiday and got in touch with Robertson, who moved there in 1972.

“As soon as I saw her, I knew the spark was still there,” Anderson said.

Their romantic story has been featured on The Times and BBC in the UK.

The Christchurch City Council, as part of its 10-year budget, the long-term plan, last week confirmed on-street parking in the central city will increase from $3.10 an hour to $4.50 – a 45 per cent increase.

The cost to park at the council’s Lichfield St car park building will also rise from $2.80 an hour to $4 – a 43 per cent increase. The rate at the Art Gallery car park doubles from $2 an hour to $4.

By comparison, people are charged $4.50 an hour to park in central Wellington and $2.50 on the weekend. Auckland charges $5 an hour for the first two hours and then $10 per hour after that.

The on-street fee hikes are expected to generate $660,000 of additional revenue for Christchurch. That figure would have been $960,000, but the council planned to waive the credit card fees and pay them itself, at a cost of $300,000.

The increase in off-street parking charges is expected to bring in an extra $162,000.

There was also a bin taken away from the corner of Martindales and Port Hills Rd where the old corner store was during COVID for “health reasons” which has never been replaced.

I don’t know what it is they think they’re doing but they can hardly enforce antilittering laws if there are no receptacles for people to put their rubbish in. I carried my doggy doo bag home this morning but I doubt that many Dogwalkers will be so conscientious, although they are much more inclined to be so if there is a handy receptacle to put their leavings in. And yes I know about SmartBins-wonder if we are in the lottery for one of those???!!

The city is falling to pieces inch by inch and all they can do is remove all the rubbish bins-mind boggling.
