Hi neighbours,

Emma Milburn and Dart have been a search and rescue tag team for nearly a decade.

But as bearded border collie Dart, 13, gets older, she soon faces retirement, bringing an end to the special career shared between her and her handler.

The pair have been through a lot together. Milburn did all of Dart’s search and rescue training herself, pretty much everyday for eight years straight. The time and dedication it took to train a dog to be operational in search and rescue tasks was often overlooked, Milburn said.

A terminally ill homeless woman who found a “connection to people” had agreed to re-engage with support services just hours before she was allegedly murdered.

Barbara Campbell, who preferred to be called Rose, made the outside of the old Save Mart shop in New Brighton, Christchurch, her home over recent weeks.

While she was known to be volatile and abusive at times, those who knew and spent time with her say she was a bubbly, cheeky soul who came from a significantly complex upbringing.

End in sight for Riccarton Rd roadworks, after five years and $49 million

More than five years after contractors first started ripping up Christchurch’s busy Riccarton Rd, the city council says no more work is planned along the 3.2-kilometre stretch.

Since September 2016, the council has spent about $49 million refurbishing and modernising the street, which stretches from Hagley Park to Church Corner.

The work has added bus and cycle lanes, made safety improvements to intersections, and replaced scores of old wastewater and water pipes that had reached the end of their usable life.

The final phase of work involves laying new pipes under a 1.7km stretch of Riccarton Rd between Matipo St and Hansons Lane.

The city council's infrastructure, planning and regulatory services general manager, Jane Davis, said this phase would be completed by the end of February.

It would take until the end of March to complete most projects in surrounding streets, she added.

“[After this], we do not have any roadworks or major maintenance planned for Riccarton Rd,” Davis said, though she pointed out that, as with any road, unplanned work could arise.

Anyone who visited the locations during the listed times was asked to self-monitor for Covid-19 symptoms for 10 days after being exposed.

The same advice was issued for anyone who visited the popular Riverside Market on Oxford Tce between 4.29pm and 5pm last Wednesday, Rollickin Gelato Cafe on Cashel St on the same day between 5pm and 5.05pm, or Ballantynes department store on Cashel St between 4.11pm and 4.31pm.

Anyone who visited Kathmandu on Colombo St in central Christchurch on the same day between 3.40pm and 3.50pm or Kmart on Riccarton Rd on Thursday between 7.45pm and 8.30pm should also self-monitor for symptoms.

The Ministry of Health advised anyone who developed symptoms to stay home until a negative test result was returned.

One of Christchurch’s biggest pool complexes will be closed for two weeks this summer for planned maintenance work.

The pools at Taiora: QEII Recreation and Sports Centre would be closed from January 17 to 30 for work including maintenance of circulation pumps, filters, heating systems and pool tanks.

The rest of the facility, including the gym and group fitness classes, would remain open as normal, but pool staff would be redeployed to other facilities during this time

Christchurch City Council head of recreation, sports and events Nigel Cox said contractors did as much as they could during last year’s level 3 lockdown when the pools were closed to the public.

The work was part of the council’s regular, rolling maintenance schedule for its recreation facilities, he said.

An automatic door between the pool change rooms and reception would also be installed to help cut down on any draughts coming from reception through to the pool.

“We thank the community for their patience when we carry this work out across our network. This regular maintenance helps avoid unscheduled shutdowns.”

The work was scheduled now, while the summer school holidays were still under way, to minimise the impact on Swimsmart lessons and group bookings, Cox said.

People could still book into school holiday swimming programmes at one of the council’s other facilities: Jellie Park, Pioneer, Graham Condon or the recently opened Te Pou Toetoe: Linwood Pool.

Cox encouraged the community to use other facilities, or the council’s summer pools, while the QEII pools were closed.

Summer pools are located in Lyttelton, Waltham and Templeton, as well as Jellie Park and Te Hāpua: Halswell Centre.

The purpose of the web events is to carry the message to newcomers who live in areas where there are no AEA meetings and to strengthen areas where there are sole AEA members. These events are not designed to replace face-to-face meetings. Rather, we hope that face-to-face meetings will grow and increase as a result of having regular web events.
