With winter bugs doing the rounds, itโ€™s worth knowing what the rules are about sick leave. So what are you entitled to?

โ€ข In general youโ€™re entitled to 5 daysโ€™ of sick leave each year after youโ€™ve worked for your employer for 6 months.
โ€ข You can accumulate any unused sick leave up to a total of 20 days.
โ€ข Sick leave can be used when youโ€™re sick or when you need to be off work to look after someone else who is sick or injured (your partner, child, or someone who relies on you for care).
โ€ข Even if youโ€™re a part-time or casual worker, youโ€™re still entitled to 5 daysโ€™ of sick leave a year (once youโ€™ve worked for 6 months continuously or for an average of 10 hours per week, and at least one hour in every week or 40 hours in every month).
โ€ข Your employer can require you to provide a medical certificate if youโ€™re sick for 3 or more days in a row, and youโ€™ll need to pay to get it. If they want proof of sickness sooner then they will have to pay the costs of getting the proof.

These are the minimum sick leave entitlements. Your employer can agree to give you more.

Check out our website for more information about sick leave and other employment rights and responsibilities. If youโ€™ve got questions get in touch with a CAB near you, call us on 0800 367 222 (0800 FOR CAB), or contact us online.

Aaron Campbell from Aaron Campbell - Fendalton-Waimairi-Harewood Board

The council has stopped chlorine treatment at the Burnside and Farrington pump stations in the north west supply zone.

About 80,000 people are in the North West zone and turning off treatment at the Burnside and Farrington pump stations means 37 per cent of the zone is getting untreated water.

The Council is working through a similar process to stop chlorination at the following pump stations:
Thompsons and Grampian in the North West zone
Hills and Lake Terrace in the Central zone
Woolston in the Ferrymead zone

**The below ground wells can only stop being used at times of low (winter) water demand. If demand goes up and water needs to be drawn from the below ground well heads, water from the pump station will need to be treated.
