Emergency Mobile Alert should work in areas with cell reception. About 97% of populated areas get cell reception, and work is being done by the mobile service operators to improve mobile coverage all the time.

The Nationwide Test of Emergency Mobile Alert is on 25 November between 6 and 7pm.

Up to $2 million will be spent on carrying out interim remediation work on dozens of the city’s below ground well heads.

Christchurch City Council has today given the go ahead for interim remediation work to be done on up to 42 below ground well heads that tap into flowing artesian aquifers where the risk of contamination is low.

β€œIf we want to meet our target of getting the chlorine out of our drinking water by May next year we need to do this interim remediation work,’’ says Cr Pauline Cotter, Chair of the Council’s Infrastructure, Transport and Environment Committee.

Drinking alcohol on the streets and parks around Linwood Village will be banned permanently under a bylaw change approved by Christchurch City Council today.

The Council put in place a temporary liquor ban late last year in a bid to try and reduce the high level of alcohol-fuelled crime and disorder in the area.

That ban has proved effective so now the Council has decided to make it permanent as part of its Replacement Alcohol Restrictions in Public Places Bylaw, which will come into effect on 18 December 2018.
