Christchurch has been named as a finalist for New Zealand’s most beautiful large city - competing against Tauranga for the honour.

Keep New Zealand Beautiful announced the finalists of its Beautiful Awards 2023 on Tuesday. The not-for-profit organisation has held the awards annually since 1972 and this year's winners will be announced November 9.

“The awards are a chance for Kiwis to put their community on the map and to celebrate a stand-out sustainability initiative," Keep New Zealand Beautiful chief executive Heather Saunderson said.

“This collective contribution is key to maintaining the biodiversity of Aotearoa and to creating a waste and climate conscious future for the next generations.

Christchurch was selected as a finalist in the large city category (major urban area with 100,000 or more residents) because of its council’s focus on sustainable local food production and distribution systems, a statement by Keep New Zealand Beautiful said.

Could a permanent police helicopter be in the pipeline for Christchurch?

As authorities in the city grapple with a wave of car thefts and reckless driving by youths, top brass haven’t ruled it out.

In the last 10 months, police in Christchurch have chartered commercial helicopters to help catch rampant young offenders on four occasions, most recently on Wednesday when a trio of youngsters in a stolen car left a trail of havoc from Heathcote to Belfast – ripping up a sports field, forcing a school into lockdown, and closing part of a highway.

They allow fleeing drivers to be tracked from the air, meaning officers don’t have to engage in risky pursuits, particularly when roads are busy during the daytime. It also spares their patrol cars from being damaged by youth offenders, who’ve shown a willingness to ram their way out of tricky situations.

This email is a scam and anyone who receives it should not reply under any circumstances. Although some versions of the email do not specifically reference money, other similar scams involve the recipient being issued a ‘fine’ when they respond. Police have received several reports of this scam and enquiries are underway.

It’s important to note that Police and other government agencies will never contact you out of the blue and ask for your password, credit card or bank details.
Anyone who received this email scam is asked to send it as an attachment in an email to the Police Cybercrime Team: cybercrime@police.govt.nz

Police recommend taking a cautious approach to unsolicited emails.
