Kiwis for kiwi is on a mission to turn that decline around. We partner with kiwi conservation projects all over New Zealand, with a long-term vision to increase the population by 2% every year and take our national icon from endangered to everywhere.

But we need your help. Please make a donation or organise a fundraising event to make sure the kiwi sticks around for future generations.

First it was 'David Smore', and now 'A Shaw High'.

Green Party leader James Shaw visited Christchurch's Rollickin Gelato on Tuesday and followed in the footsteps of his opposition as he sampled a cone of his dedicated ice cream 'A Shaw High'.

Shaw arrived at the Cashel St parlour on a bicycle along with 20 to 30 of his supporters and Green MPs dressed in green, and also on bikes, waving party flags and trying Shaw's ice cream flavour in unison.

The flavour is a pistachio sorbet with almond milk, hemp crumble and brownies. It's dairy free, gluten free and vegan.

Shaw however, unlike his ice cream, was not vegan, he said.

He spoke with supporters about cycleways and e-bikes and said he was a "cone man for sure" when it came to ice cream.

Last month, ACT Party leader David Seymour also enjoyed his flavour 'David Smore' at Rollickin in Christchurch.

The ice cream shop has established itself as a campaign hot spot, with politicians stopping by to try their own uniquely dedicated scoops and spread their party's message.

Hey neighbours,

In the lead up to the 2020 election, Stuff is keeping voters up to date with what’s happening in their electorate, through Neighbourly. Here’s what you need to know about the candidates in the running to be Te Tai Tonga's MP.

At the October 17 election, New Zealanders will have the opportunity to choose their regional spokesperson.

Through the Mixed Member Proportional (MMP) voting system, those enrolled can vote for the party they want as well as a local representative.

Why does my MP matter?

The person elected will be the voice for your region in Parliament. If you’re having trouble getting entitlements or dealing with Government departments, they can help. If your community needs funding for certain projects or activities, or there isn’t enough healthcare in the area, the elected MP can step in and help.

The Café Focus Group at Bupa Parkstone Retirement Village in Ilam, Christchurch provided their feedback on the potential cabinet food for a new village café experience. The group enjoyed tasting both savoury and sweet items including muffins, macarons and wraps.

It was a thumbs up for the delicious carrot cake and bite sized ginger slice, and a thumbs down for the crumbly Vietnamese spring rolls.

Harvey Bray, who has been a resident at Bupa Parkstone Retirement Village for five years, says he’s looking for food that’s easy to eat, wholesome, and nutritious.

“It’s really important that we have our say and are part of this, after all this café will be at our home and we are the village. A lot of people I talk to about the possibility of retirement village living are frightened they’ll lose their independence and that’s just not true, we even have a say on our own café.”

Other feedback from the group was around making sure portion sizes aren’t too large, choices for their grandchildren when they come to visit, such as the lollie cake they tried. There were also comments on ensuring the café will have gluten free, and vegan options too.

Jan Summerell, Bupa National Hospitality Services Manager says the village residents are really excited about the opportunity to give feedback on a new café experience.

“We want to provide a café that not only our residents want to visit, but also their families and the local Ilam community. Backing local is important to us too, that’s why we’ll be serving Jail Breaker coffee, a Christchurch based roastery.”

The group have named the café as Cafe Corfe (pronounced corfay), and it’s scheduled to open in late October, three days a week – Friday to Sunday from 10am till 4pm.
