Grace Prendergast and Kerri Gowler were hot favourites to win the women's pair final after setting the world’s fastest time in the semi-final in Tokyo on Wednesday.
But the odds did nothing to ease Sally Prendergast's nerves going into Thursday's final.
She conceded she “didn’t even watch the end”.
Sally Prendergast told Stuff she was "wide awake" overnight with excitement and nerves, but said the family was confident in the pair's ability.
Grace Prendergast, who was born in Christchurch in 1992, began rowing for Villa Maria College out of Avon Rowing Club in Christchurch in 2007.

"I have a deeply personal connection to Graeme Dingle Foundation as I was blessed to be a child in your youth development programmes many years ago. For this, I extend a massive fa’afetai lava (thank you!). Will always be super grateful for the learning and development from your programme. I was part of Kiwi Can through Koru School. My Kiwi Can Leader was an awesome human named Ina (I think that’s his name). Funny – I don’t remember much about primary school but I definitely remember our Kiwi Can sessions."

Wigram MP and Minister of Housing Megan Woods attended Hillmorton High School on Wednesday to announce funding for five new temporary classrooms to accommodate the increased roll.
Ten years ago Hillmorton High School’s roll dropped below 600 as the Christchurch earthquake saw 5000 students leave the city, but now it was one of the fastest growing and was expected to increase its roll to 1100 students.
Principal Ann Brokenshire says a combination of new homes in Christchurch’s south-western suburbs and work to address school enrolment zones have contributed to the school’s growth.
Alongside the five new temporary classrooms, a planned sports centre would also be constructed, including two classrooms and a fitness centre that doubled as a learning space.

The New York-based magazine and website drew upon its global network of correspondents and contributors to compile the 100-strong list “as a tribute to the people and businesses at the forefront” of the travel, tourism and hospitality industries so badly affected by the Covid-19 pandemic.
Christchurch was commended for its ongoing transformation in the wake of the earthquake that reduced much of the city to rubble a decade ago.
While the rebuild is not complete, TIME contributor Jessica Wynne Lockhart noted vacant lots were “regularly filled with creative and interactive installations such as hammock forests and a coin-operated dance floor.”

I started dieting when I was 12 years old. I wasn’t overweight but I felt pudgy and I wanted a new boy at school to like me. Somehow, I obtained a calorie counting book and quickly memorized it. Each day, I tried hard to reach my goal of eating a certain number of calories. It was well below what I needed to eat as a growing child, but I didn’t see it that way at the time. I just wanted to get rid of my squishy stomach and eat a little less. Thus began a powerful obsession with being thin and trying to control my eating. But I also couldn’t see that at the time. I didn’t realize how much mental energy and time I spent thinking about what I was eating, when, and how much, or how inadequate I felt for not being perfect or thin enough.
