Below is information on changes during lockdown to rubbish and recycling collection for urban and rural residents throughout Wairarapa, by Masterton, Carterton and South Wairarapa district councils.
Key points:
• kerbside recycling collection suspended for two weeks
• transfer stations closed to all but essential services.
Urban residents:
• Kerbside rubbish collection will continue as normal.
• Recycling collection will be suspended for the next two weeks while we ensure a safe protocol is in place for pick-up and processing - this includes Riversdale and Castlepoint.
• Don’t forget to pick up your Council rubbish bags when your nominated bubble member heads to the supermarket for essentials.
• Or, make sure they’re included when you place your online shopping order for delivery.
• Transfer stations are closed to all except those providing essential services (as listed here: covid19.govt.nz... )
• If you have rubbish collection through a private provider, check to see if their services are still running.
Essential services:
• If you’re providing an essential service, you can continue to take rubbish and recycling to Wairarapa transfer stations.
• Transfer station operators can readily identify those who are likely to be an essential service.
• You’ll need to show a drivers licence at the transfer station.
Rural residents:
• If you normally put your rubbish out for Council collection on the roadside, continue as normal. Recycling collection will be suspended for the next two weeks while we ensure a safe protocol for pick-up and processing.
• If you have rubbish collection through a private provider, check to see if their services are still running.
• If you normally take your rubbish and recycling to the transfer station, and you’re NOT registered as an essential service, we are asking you to find a dry place to keep your rubbish and recycling for the time being.
• We want everyone to stay at home to eliminate COVID-19. While it may be inconvenient, stockpiling rubbish and recycling for now will help save lives by stopping the spread of the virus.
• Still use the Council rubbish bags as you will be able to drop off when the transfer station reopens fully.
• We appreciate that having rubbish remain on your property is not ideal, but it’s all part of saving lives in the Wairarapa. Here are some tips to help:
o Now is the time, more than ever, to try and reduce and reuse wherever possible to minimize your stockpile.
o Wash all your recycling to stop it getting smelly
o If you don’t have compost for food waste, now’s a good time to start one
o Keep non-compostable food waste in a high location where animals and children can’t get to it (It’s best not bury it, this will attract vermin if it contains bones etc)
o Another option is to put meat bones into a deep freeze if you have space, or you can put carcasses in a fire (but not other household rubbish like plastic).
o More tips are available here: lovefoodhatewaste.co.nz...

It's great to see people looking out for each other at a time of great stress, but please be very careful when you do this.
Coronavirus spreads on objects. This is what makes it hard to contain. It lives for at least 24 hours on paper and cardboard, it lives for 12 hours on metal (some studies have found it still alive 4 days later) and 4 days on plastic.
So swapping bits of paper across families is a great way to spread it. This is why businesses have stopped accepting cash.
Coronavirus on objects is a hard concept to get your head around. I've explained it to my grandson as "the person who touched that before you had snot on their hands. Do you want to pick that up."
So try to stay connected, but please avoid object sharing or if you need to - wipe clean anything you share.
Hi people. We're still working - like so many people - but in a different way. This page explains how to contact us and has useful links for visitors. Stay at home, stay safe. Be kind.
This is a crucial time. You might be tempted to leave the house this weekend to enjoy your free time. But it’s incredibly important that you don’t revert back to ‘normal life’.

Remember why we are all taking these extreme measures. Stay home. Save lives. This breaks the chain and stops the virus spreading.
How to break the chain, and protect us all:
STOP THE MOVEMENT
The virus is spread by us. It can’t move by itself. So we all need to avoid moving around as much as possible, eg:
● don't travel to and from baches or second homes
● avoid driving out of your neighbourhood
● don't travel across the country in campervans
● note that DOC has closed all of its campsites and huts.
KEEP EXERCISE LOCAL
There are very few exceptions to staying home, but exercise is one of them. Going for a walk, run or bike ride is good for your mental health. Just remember to:
● stay close to home. Enjoy your neighbourhood, but go no further
● keep it solitary, or only with those you live with
● keep a 2 metre distance from others.
DO SAFE ACTIVITIES ONLY
● Our emergency services need to be fully available to respond to COVID-19 cases. Any search and rescue operation reduces the ability of first responders to help others.
● Do your bit to help them by only undertaking safe activities, and avoiding going into areas where you could get lost or hurt and require their help. Avoid outdoor activities like swimming, surfing, tramping, or boating, hunting or hiking.
AVOID PUBLIC SPACES
● All bars, restaurants, cafes, gyms, cinemas, pools, museums, libraries and playgrounds are closed.
● Avoid places like beaches where people commonly linger, or are unable to maintain a 2 metre distance.
● Don't touch surfaces others may have touched when outdoors, like park benches or playgrounds.
When you return home carefully wash your hands, and any items you took with you outdoors.

There must be plenty of organisations run by volunteers that are struggling to provide their services eg meals on wheels. We need some clarity on this.

Nominated by Eric Rooke from Waikanae: "This man got out of Vietnam by himself when he was 13, sailed on a boat and spent time in camps before coming to NZ. He could not speak English. He purchased a local dairy and over the years has totally transformed and enlarged it providing employment to a number of locals. He is the ultimate friendly shopkeeper."
