Our local food banks do a fantastic job in helping those in need across our communities.
Already under pressure to meet the demand for their services, all our local food banks have seen an increased need for food parcels during COVID-19.
Recognising a genuine need, and given the alignment with our commitment to supporting our local communities, WBS launched an initiative to donate a car-load of groceries and other essential items to each of the community based food banks that operate across the Wairarapa.
Now more than ever, our communities need extra help, and this is just one of the ways that WBS continues to support and give back to the region that we’ve called home for nearly 150 years.
Our region is fortunate to have food banks in each of our major towns, with food banks located in Masterton, Carterton, Greytown, Featherston and Martinborough. Collectively they supply food for literally hundreds of people across the Wairarapa region. The impacts of COVID-19 have only increased the need for their services and all the food banks and the fantastic volunteers who run them worked tirelessly to keep up with the increased demand during this period. For example, Martinborough alone saw an increase of over 300% for food parcels during Alert Level 4. Being able to scale up and respond to changes in community needs is vital and its why WBS was so pleased to be able to play a role in helping to assist our food banks.

Former St Matthew’s Collegiate student Gemma Sims has been awarded this year’s Golden C’Art Scholarship from Masterton Trust Lands Trust (MTLT) to help with her study towards a Bachelor of Design with Honours at Massey University in Wellington.
Worth $1,000, the scholarship is awarded to a top performing Wairarapa student in a fine arts subject who is going on to study an arts-related course at a New Zealand tertiary institution. The recipient is selected through agreement by Wairarapa secondary school principals.
Ms Sims said it was a “very nice surprise” to get the scholarship, which will be a big help towards her study fees.
“The scholarship will take some of the stress off my study costs and allow me to focus more on my course,” she said.
“It’s also motivating to know there are people who are backing me and wanting me to do well.”
Ms Sims said she was enjoying the course and the chance to learn so many aspects of design. Following her studies, Ms Sims is planning to pursue a career in industrial design.
“Industrial design is part of so many of the products that we use every day. My goal is to work for a large company and design things that people will enjoy using.”

CAPTION: Masterton Trust Lands Trust Education Committee Chair Christine Brewster with 2020 Golden C’Art Scholarship winner Gemma Sims.

Mark from Masterton District

Hi All
I need some aerated concrete panel, such as Hebel or Rockcote Integra, or similar. Offcuts will do, perhaps left over from a job and you want it gone? Around 1.5m x 2m all up, can be smaller pieces.
Kind regards,
