Check out the two events on Saturday 23 October at the Anzac Hall, 62 Bell Street, Featherston from 11am.
Rick Gekoski, a firm favourite with book festival audiences and his many readers, will entertain in fine style, as he shares stories of his years working in the rare book trade. Local writer and broadcaster Noelle McCarthy will strap in to travel with Rick through his life and times, discussing people he’s met, books he’s discovered, read and written, and dragons he’s slain.

Next up it’s time to saddle up as John Hellemans elaborates on the details of his hilarious cycling adventures during the 2018 Tour Aotearoa in his book A Biker’s Tale. No matter the travails of the day as he rode the 3000 km from Cape Reinga to Bluff, each day he hammered away at his laptop. As well as allowing him to make sense of all that passed through his mind during his day of pedalling, that labour resulted in A Biker’s Tale – a book the Kiwi cycling pioneers, the Kennett Brothers, have called “a must-read for casual and serious bikers alike.”

Details here: www.eventfinda.co.nz... You can buy tickets at the Masterton and Martinborough i-SITEs

Join the rest of the motu on October 28 by taking part in our national earthquake drill and tsunami hīkoi, ShakeOut. Signing up only takes 2 minutes and when you do, you’ll be entered to win a personal emergency grab bag or civil defence wheelie bin kit from NZ Civil Defence.
ShakeOut takes place around the world to remind people of the right action to take during an earthquake:

DROP - down on your hands and knees. This protects you from falling but lets you move if you need to.

COVER - your head and neck (or entire body if possible) under a sturdy table or desk (if it is within a few steps of you). If there is no shelter nearby, cover your head and neck with your arms and hands.

HOLD - on to your shelter (or your position to protect your head and neck) until the shaking stops. If the shaking shifts your shelter around, move with it.

Head to www.shakeout.govt.nz... to sign up today and get involved!

"Christmas Cards for those that may be alone this Christmas."
Sending Love is about people and communities coming together to make a festive gesture towards another person who may experience loneliness over Christmas. It is one person putting love and thought into a card to pass a smile and a sense of feeling remembered and loved onto another person.

It is not an organization, or a charity; "Sending Love" is a platform and vehicle to enable sending love from one individual to another. It is an avenue to teach communities and children about the power of a simple act of kindness, and the impact this can have on the recipient. It is also about raising awareness in communities across the country of what may be behind closed doors, the sad reality of the loneliness that exists around us all, and that each and every one of us are empowered and have the capacity to be part changing that.

Cards made by children bring a lot of joy to anyone who receives them, there is something very special about them.
The nationwide project started in 2017, we received 32,000 cards within 5-weeks to distribute to rest homes and some RSA's, Meals on Wheels, hospital wards, Women's Refuge etc.

Due to Covid it is uncertain if "Sending Love" will continue collecting cards in other areas, but I am happy to continue to do so at a local level.
Last year I collected 968 cards from our local community.
That's 968 smiles
A huge thank you to everyone who made this possible. Lets see if we can reach 1000 this year!!!
I will advise collection points at a later date.
Feel free to contact me on 0273269434 or tyddahunt@xtra.co.nz

Thanks in advance

Now since 5 years ago or so, they stopped doing it so I would walk the dog in knee high wet grass. We asked many times why they wouldn't do it and they said they "never did it in the first place". Now we finally got an answer: they won't mow in a 100kph zone. Ummm there's not many cars down there and most go up to 80 anyway. I'm just so tempted to voluntarily mow it at this stage but I will need a weedeater for that length!!
