Enjoy this weekend by combining both shopping and doing good for the cyclone-affected Hawke's Bay this weekend in Wairarapa.

This Saturday (25 Feb) Greytown is hosting ‘Day for the Bay’ and invites all to come along to support our northern neighbours.

Greytown businesses, services and hospitality venues have joined forces to put on a day of specials, offers and raffles with more than $10,000 in prizes! The aim is to raise much-needed cash for residents and rural communities who lost so much following Cyclone Gabrielle.

Organisers are encouraging all to come and support the ‘Day for the Bay’ this Saturday.

Also, there's plenty to do in Wairarapa this weekend.

Farmers Markets in Featherston, Carterton and Wairarapa have much to offer just wander around, soak up the rural vibe and take some treasures home with you.

Edmond Fallot mustards have been making mustard since 1840.

A family run business, Leon Bouley founded a mustard mill and oil production facility in Burgundy that became well known for the it’s excellent mustard.

The grandson of Edmond Fallot now runs the state of the art facility to produce those same mustards.

Mustard production in France itself dates back to 1292 when the first records can be found that describe a mustard maker –a ‘moutadier’ .. Up until the 1850’s mustard production had been a labour intensive process like much food production at the time and the mechanisation processes that began to revolutionise the industry resulted in new regulations being created to safe guard quality and taste. These were again updated recently in 2000 .

Fallot is one of the most well known and last true craftsman of mustards in France today.

Dijon has become one of the most well known varieties. Mustard cultivation in Asia dates back much further and it’s use quite different than what we know but in Burgundy the limestone terroir idea for wine was also good for mustard production. Dating back to 1390, production became more established and regulated with the establishment of the City of Dijon Corporation of Vinegar and Mustard Makers in 1634.

So an age old tradition lovingly crafted to careful time honored conditions what we are celebrating in July.

Lavender sugar is a great alternative to vanilla sugar as a topping for candies, cakes, and other pastries. It's also a wonderful sweetener for tea.

Try Loose Lavender Buds in red sauces for pasta or pizza, it gives an intriguing rich taste. Just a teaspoon full is enough.

They also go well with fruit, especially raspberries and blueberries. A crème anglais flavoured with lavender makes an elegant end to a meal. Lavender is used in savory breads, pastries and in cakes biscuits and muffins quite successfully.

Mint and lemon are two other flavours that combine well with Lavender.

From a nutritional point of view, Black Garlic has a similar content of allicin, the active ingredient in White Garlic that imparts its benefits, but without the odour. Additionally, Black Garlic is rich in amino acids and has almost double the amount of antioxidants when compared to White Garlic. But that is not the whole story.

Black Garlic also contains an additional very specific compound called S-Allycysteine (SAC) in very high concentrations, compared to White Garlic which is water soluble and thus absorbed easily within the body. S-Allylcysteine has been shown to assist with the absorption of allicin. This makes Black Garlic much more effective than White Garlic for all the benefits mentioned above and additionally it is well tolerated by the digestive system so the chance of gastric distress is completely minimised.
