A once-forlorn and ageing memorial to the fallen soldiers of 20th century wars has been given a much-needed refresh, in time for its 100th anniversary on Anzac Day last week.
The Drury cenotaph on Tui St was unveiled by former Prime Minister William Massey on Anzac Day 1922.
Today, thanks to volunteer hours, donations and skills, the cenotaph has a fresh coat of paint, an elegant stone set base and a garden of flowers around it.
Drury Community Committee members Riet van der Gulik and Steve O’Connor were behind the refresh, and said it was amazing to watch the community rally around the cenotaph.
They told us all about their efforts - read more below.

I am seeking expressions of interest for like minded people of all ages to join in with the design and build of the 100-120 foot long race track and learn how to build and race slot cars. Slot Car Racing is a fantastic and fun hobby for little cost and great reward.
We are planning to hold regular race meetings for various scale classes of 1/32nd and 1/24th scale race cars.
There are just 2 clubs running in Auckland at Henderson and Albany, but nobody in Franklin / South Auckland districts.
Typical Race Lap times between 2.2 sec for Wing Cars and 4-5 sec per GT / Saloon class if you are good enough?.
View progress at www.gscr.co.nz...
Please reply to this notice or email donrailton98@gmail.com if you want to consider joining this newly established racing club. (name yet to be penned)
