The pig control initiative is part of Auckland Council's work under the Regional Pest Management Plan to protect the island's environment, human health and taonga.
Auckland Council senior conservation advisor Deryn Dromgoole said the feral pig control programme had been undertaken strategically across Waiheke over the last four years.
The council had worked closely with landowners to achieve results, he said.
“We’re now at a point where feral pigs remain at very limited numbers in a localised area on the island and we believe that eradication can be achieved sooner than we had originally anticipated.”
Feral pigs can have significant negative impacts on native ecosystems, primary production, infrastructure and are potential vectors of kauri dieback disease and bovine tuberculosis.
Ngāti Pāoa Trust Board co-chair Danella Roebeck said the trustees were supportive of the feral pig control work at their Waiheke Station.
“In addition to the negative impacts feral pigs can have on indigenous species, they also affect production systems by damaging pasture and grain crops, and, more rarely, killing and eating lambs," Roebeck said.
Waiheke Local Board Chair Cath Handley said Waiheke was free of kauri dieback disease and the board needed to be proactive to keep it that way.
"Pigs damage kauri roots which can cause infections to start, and pigs roaming can spread the disease.
“We also need to make sure our waterways are protected from erosion and sedimentation that can result from pig rooting.”

A $452 million 21-storey high-rise building has been unveiled and is to be built above one of Auckland's new railway stations.
Auckland Council has signed over a $40 million, 125-year lease to a Malaysian developer which will see construction take place over the City Rail Link's underground Aotea Station set to open in 2024.
The plans include commercial and retail space, 60 apartments and a public plaza. The developer, Malaysian Resources Corporation Berhad (MRCB), will begin construction of the nearly half-billion dollar building after the completion of the station in 2024, and is expected to take about three years.

Have you had your say on Auckland Council's recovery budget for 2021 to 2031?
You have until March 22 to give your feedback on the council's proposed 10-year budget, to highlight what is important to you and how it should be paid for.
Auckland’s recovery budget will increase the council’s total capital investment in the city from $26 billion to $31 billion over the next 10 years.
The investment will deliver infrastructure for transport, housing and water along with helping to stimulate jobs and boost the economy.
It will respond to the impacts of climate change, protect the environment, and provide essential services to Aucklanders.
The budget sets out a continued focus on savings to manage the loss of council income from the financial fallout of COVID-19, with cumulative losses projected to reach around $1 billion by 2024.
Which council services are important to you?
How do you think they should be funded?

Almost to the day, we were celebrating the 25th Anniversary of the New Zealand School of Food and Wine with special wine tastings, cooking classes, forage and gastronomic dinner for over 75 guests + our students. Many of our Christchurch team, including Lois, Philippe and Victoria had come up for the weekend. My mother-in-law, June Hay had also joined us from her retirement home in Christchurch. By Sunday 15 March, I was getting pretty nervous about Covid-19 and rather than have June stay in the North Island for a holiday, she returned home the next day. A few days later June's rest home went into lockdown and I counted the 14 days to see if we too had a NZSFW Covid Cluster. Fortunately not! See below some photos as we recalled the 10th Anniversary of the Christchurch Earthquakes.
