New Zealand Police are advising the public to be vigilant, after a handful of reports have been made in recent days. Unfortunately, at least two elderly Aucklanders have been conned out of tens of thousands of dollars.
Waitematā CIB’s Detective Senior Sergeant Ryan Bunting says scammers are cold calling, mainly on landlines, and claim to be a Police officer.“They will also provide a fake ID or badge number to make their call seem legitimate,” he says.“This person will carry on and provide a reason for their call: either they are investigating fake bank notes, or that your credit card has been cloned.
“As part of this scam, they will ask you to withdraw money from a nearby bank to be collected or ask you to provide further financial or banking information to aid their investigation.”
Be aware: this is a scam call.
Police are investigating two reports this week, in south Auckland and the North Shore, where two people have fallen victim to the scam. “Both victims withdrew cash from a bank and handed this over to someone who arrived at their door to collect it under the fake cover story,” Detective Senior Sergeant Bunting says.“These victims have had their good-will and trust trodden on by these scammers.”
Investigation staff have ensured there is support available for the victims. Detective Senior Sergeant Bunting says: “Scammers have no ethics whatsoever and will take any opportunity to try and con you.“These scams take many forms, and the offenders trick people under a variety of guises or storylines.”
There are occasions where legitimate Police officers will contact people as part of their duties, he says.
Police are asking the community to be aware and take the opportunity to spread the word amongst friends and family members. “We are particularly keen to ensure elder family members are aware of what is happening,” Detective Senior Sergeant Bunting says. “If anyone receives a call of this nature, hang up.
“If you have had the unfortunate position of being a victim to this scam and have not reported this, we encourage you to report this to Police.”
Please remember:
- Police will never call to ask you for bank details, pin numbers or passwords
- Police do not offer prize money
- Police will not ask you to go to a bank to withdraw money
- If you receive a call out of the blue of a similar nature: challenge the caller to identify themselves, ask for their details.
- Hang up, contact 105 to verify the ID and request the officer to contact you
- If it sounds too good to be true, it probably is.

We understand the significance of choosing the perfect mattress size and type to ensure you wake up feeling refreshed and rejuvenated every morning.
In this comprehensive guide, we'll walk you through the factors to consider when selecting your mattress, from the kind of bed that suits your sleep style to the ideal firmness and size for your needs.
The Crucial Role of Choosing the Right Mattress for a Good Night's Rest
The foundation of restful sleep begins with your bedtime routine and, critically, with selecting the right kind of mattress.
The comfort and support provided by your mattress play a pivotal role in determining the quality of sleep you enjoy.
The significance of your sleeping position intertwines with the necessity of choosing an appropriate mattress. It's more than a matter of preference; it directly influences your sleep quality and overall well-being.
Understanding how your mattress complements your sleeping posture is key to achieving a more restful and rejuvenating night's sleep.
Spinal Alignment
The impact of your mattress on spinal alignment cannot be overstated. A mattress that properly supports your body will maintain the natural curvature of your spine, reducing pressure points and alleviating discomfort.
Tip: For back sleepers, a mattress that offers medium-firm support can help maintain the natural curve of the lower back. Side sleepers might look for a mattress that provides a softer surface to contour to the hips and shoulders, keeping the spine aligned.
Respiratory Health
Your mattress can also affect your respiratory health, particularly if it exacerbates or mitigates conditions like snoring or obstructive sleep apnea. The right mattress can support sleeping positions that promote open airways.
Tip: Side sleepers, who may experience fewer breathing difficulties, should choose a mattress that allows for easy movement and doesn’t lock them into one position.
Circulation
A mattress that restricts blood flow can lead to discomfort, numbness, or even pressure ulcers. It's vital to select a mattress that facilitates good circulation, complementing your body's needs.
Tip: A mattress that is too firm might impede circulation for side sleepers, while one that is too soft may cause back sleepers to sink too deeply, affecting blood flow.
Comfort and Support
Ultimately, the goal is to find a mattress that provides both comfort and support tailored to your preferred sleeping position. This ensures not only a restful night's sleep but also contributes to your overall health and well-being.
Tip: Invest time in testing mattresses to find one that matches your body's contours and supports your sleeping style.
Whether you prefer a plush, firm, or medium-firm mattress, the right choice can dramatically improve your sleep quality.
What Size Of Mattress Is Best For Sleep?
Selecting the right mattress size is essential for maximizing comfort and ensuring ample space for restful sleep.
For solo sleepers or children, a single or twin mattress provides ample space for a comfortable night's sleep.
Couples may opt for a larger size, such as a queen or king mattress, to ensure ample room for rest without compromising individual space and comfort.
Consider your bedroom's dimensions and personal preferences when choosing the perfect mattress size.

Honeybees make honey from nectar produced by flowers, which later turn into fruit (if it is a fruiting plant!). This honey comes from a large avocado orchard near Kaikohe in Northland and from Manuka scrub that was flowering on the nearby hills. My father-in-law was doing pollination work with his hives there and I managed to get this set aside for a special batch.
MGO 60+ Manuka. 500g pots. $16 for a pot, less if you buy 4+ pots. The honey is still runny but will thicken in time.
Also available in a Far North Six pot variety pack ($70), and in 2kg minibuckets ($45).
Honey can be couriered to you with Post Haste or picked up from me in Massey. Order through my business website: www.donbuckhoney.co.nz...
Price: $16
