The bridges form part of the Northcote Safe Cycle Route that stretches from Smale's Farm to Northcote Point, and will include iwi artwork (see below) and be lit at night.
Construction will begin in early November 2019, and will take approximately 12 months to complete.

The bridges will provide a 3.3 metre-wide, separated shared path on either side of the over-bridge. They will make it safer for kids to get to school, encourage more people to walk and cycle, and allow enough capacity for now and into the future. The works will also include:
* the existing Northern Busway Bridge will be widened at the southbound on-ramp to allow for a shared path;
* at the southbound off-ramp, the existing traffic island will be removed, the left movement will be signalised, and the existing footpath will be widened to include a shared path;
* the lighting along the route will be upgraded (where possible);
* the signalised intersections at the SH1 on/off ramps will be updated to include bikes.

Reuben Kirkwood of Ngāi Tai ki TāmakiIwi has created a custom artwork that extends across the span of the bridges. The artwork represents visually at day and night the founding of the volcanic landscape in Tāmaki. The Maori deities, Mataaho (keeper of earths secrets), Mahuika (deity of fire), and Rūamoko (deity of volcanoes), are acknowledged as alternating and interwoven threads depicting power, distortion, seismic upheaval, and the resulting creation of Pupuke.

Public consultation on the bridges was carried out by Auckland Transport in 2014 as part of the wider Northcote Safe Cycleway.

New dog signs at Chelsea Bay Beach/Telephone Road Reserve

:I'm pleased to finally check this one off! These new signs have been installed to make it clearer where the 24/7 off-leash area for dogs begins and ends.
Back in 2014, the Kaipātiki Local Board held dog rule hearings and heard about on-going problems with dogs running from the off-leash area into neighbouring properties, so we made the decision to install a dog-proof gate. But no money was ever assigned to it...

Fast-forward to 2018 and I managed to secure some budget for the project. It turned out that a gate won't work due to the terrain, so the Local Board instead decided to install information signs with maps at each end of the open area. The maps also help to clarify the boundary of the park and private properties as that isn't obvious when you are there.

When bags move like ballerinas

Ballerinas twist, turn and move so gracefully that they often seem other-worldly, but would you ever compare a ballerina to a bag?

In our Carried Away: Bags Unpacked exhibition, artist Isaac Katzoff’s glass bag got itself a nickname of just that: the ballerina. The nickname was given after the bag hinted at graceful movement while it was under the spotlight in the photography studio - it's inner performer was at the ready.

Although the Museum holds many objet d’art (art objects), the beautiful photography and images of the collection are themselves works of art, as this image of Katzoff's bag here is. Museum photographers work behind the scenes to create images of objects that act as both documentation and art.

As Artweek Auckland comes to a close this weekend, we wanted to showcase just one of many of the wonderful objet d'art from within our Applied Arts & Design collection.

Come and see 'the ballerina' for yourself, alongside many other wonderful works of art at Carried Away: Bags Unpacked, on now and free with Museum entry.

Hands on Ecology FREE course consists of three-hour classes once a week for nine weeks. Classes take place mainly in the forest as students are introduced to different aspects of New Zealand’s unique ecology.
From stream care to plant identification Hands on Ecology is of interest to those who are wanting to learn about our distinctive land. We take all comers from new migrants to conservation professionals and love sharing our appreciation of nature with all.

Hands on Ecology will upskill those working on restoration projects, pest management and plant nursery work.

This is our regular and a very popular course that inspired many participants to expand their home gardens, change the way they live and even share their acquired knowledge with their local community.

As part of this course, we can support your enrolment and learn towards a FREE Horticulture Level 3 Certification through Open Polytechnic, in this scenario you must attend each class, otherwise pick available dates in the registration form.
