Hundreds of thousands of Kiwis who do not yet have both doses of the Covid-19 vaccine face a tightening of their freedoms on December 3, when the Government moves the entire country into the new “traffic-light” system.

Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern announced the date on Monday, saying Covid-19 was not going to be eradicated from New Zealand.

“The hard truth is that Delta is here and not going away,” Ardern said.

While Aucklanders will finally see an end to New Zealand’s longest lockdown, those in other parts of the country could face far more restrictions if they have not been fully-vaccinated.

Kia ora neighbours,

A new poll released by the Hauraki Gulf Forum has found there is overwhelming public support for more measures to protect and restore the Hauraki Gulf/Tīkapa Moana.

Of over 1000 respondents, 81% said they love and have a very strong attachment to the Gulf, including its beaches, shorelines and islands. The greatest public concerns for the health of the Gulf are plastics (73% of respondents said this had the most negative impact), sewage (72%), chemicals (70%), and commercial fishing (63%).

Methods proposed to protect the Gulf include planting all waterways, re-establishing lost shellfish-beds and reefs, and banning fishing methods such as dredging and bottom-trawling that damage the sea-floor. 84% of respondents supported these actions, with less than 3% in opposition.

Do you love being in/around the Gulf, and do you think it should be protected? Share your thoughts below and don't forget to type NFP if you don't want your comment featured in the conversations section of the North Shore Times.

Where's wallaby? Drone sweeps Long Bay Regional Park in search of pest

Not at Long Bay Regional Park, apparently.

A suspected wallaby has kept Auckland Council busy since a park volunteer claimed to have spotted it in April.

But trail cameras and a wallaby detector dog have been unsuccessful in detecting the wallaby, while scat samples collected for analysis ended up belonging to a possum.

As night fell on Wednesday, a team of forest survey specialists took to the sky with a thermal and night vision drone, in a final attempt to prove or rule out the wallaby’s existence entirely.

Mission Bay’s Memorial Fountain will be switched back on this weekend after 19 months as water restrictions in Auckland are lifted.

But Auckland Council is reminding people not to splash about in the fountain, which is a memorial for the nephew of late Auckland mayor Sir Ernest Davis.

“We are very fortunate to have this stunning memorial located on our waterfront,” Ōrākei Local Board chair Scott Milne said.

“That we are now able to turn it on again is great news, and something we are sure many will be pleased to learn because the fountain really is an attraction that visitors from all over the city come to see.”

The fountain was built in 1947 as a memorial to Trevor Moss Davis, the nephew of late Auckland mayor Sir Ernest Davis.

Ōrākei Local Board chair Scott Milne said visitors need to be considerate when heading to Selwyn Reserve.

“It I s also a good opportunity to remind people that we need to be mindful and respectful of the fact that it is a memorial, and not a splash pad or paddling pool,” he said.

The fountain was turned off in February 2020 as Auckland entered a drought.

It was turned on briefly in March for the America’s Cup finals, but has mostly been empty for the past 19 months.
