North Island supermarkets are bracing for a bread shortage as loaf makers walk off the job over pay and conditions. A reader was forced to resort to buns for her kids' lunchboxes today after finding Hobsonville Countdown supermarket shelves all but bare of loaves of bread on Tuesday night.
"Bread aisle at Countdown tonight ... #breadshortage?" Signs have gone up in other West Auckland supermarkets warning customers of a national bread shortage. "Due to Tip Top going on strike there is limited bread available. We hope to have a full range soon," the signs read. Countdown spokeswoman Charlotte Mee confirmed "supply issues" were affecting their stock. "Bread is always incredibly popular at any time of the day but unfortunately at the moment we're experiencing a few supply issues in the Upper North Island for some brands of sliced bread.
"There are plenty of buns, loaves and other bread products from our bakery and they're almost always available for customers as we bake throughout the day based on demand in each store." The shortage is linked to industrial action by more than 100 FIRST Union members at George Weston Foods' Tip Top bakeries in Otahuhu and Wiri.
The strike action meant much of the North island faced potential bread shortages. "Tip Top bakery workers are fighting to put bread on their own tables after years of negligible pay rises and no recognition of the family time they have to sacrifice to enable the company's 24/7 operation," union spokeswoman Anita Rosentreter told.
George Weston Foods general manager of baking Mark Bosomworth said the strike action meant the company was only likely to produce half its usual bread production on Tuesday and Wednesday, affecting North Island supply. Many customers would notice a slim pickings on supermarket shelves but Wellington and South Island supplies were unlikely to be affected. The company was disappointed with the union's action. Many of the claims had been settled. "We pay competitive rates, we provide good training and we provide a safe, modern work environment for our staff," he told.

The Tannery in New Lynn is selling gender-neutral gingerbread people.

SIOBHAN DOWNES ‘‘It’s become a really good conversation piece in the cafe.’’Andre Cettina An Auckland cafe is spicing things up by ditching the traditional ‘‘ginger bread man’’for a more inclusive title. About a month ago, The Tannery in New Lynn changed the label on its jar of biscuits tor ead:‘‘gingerbread gender-netural person’’. Owner Andre Cettina said the move had been inspired by a customer who questioned why the human-shaped biscuits were called ‘‘gingerbread men’’ and not ‘‘ginger bread people’’.‘‘It was completely tongue-in-cheek at the start,’’ he said. ‘‘But it’s become a really good conversation piece in the cafe.’’Cettina said because the jar was on the front counter, customers had been taking photos and sharing them on social media. ‘‘We’ve had a lot of people commenting saying‘ stop being so pedantic, it’s just a biscuit’.I had to reply to them going, ‘Did you miss the whole point?
However,Cettina said he had also received positive feedback from customers who saw the humour in the name change.‘‘It used to be that 90 per cent of the time we sold [the biscuits ],it was to kids. There’s alot more people buying them now, which is quite funny.’’The Tannery was not the only business to have given the gingerbread man a modern makeover. In April, UK super-market chain Co-op Food said it was launching a new gingerbread ‘‘person’’.The supermarket ran a campaign asking the public to come up with name ideas for the gender-neutral character, who was eventually called:‘‘Crumbs’’.

My opinion is why are you changing a sex of a fairy tale story which is already a part of kid's stories of today?

If anyone does not know the sex of themselves, check between your legs what sex you are.

Are we getting to PC Madness about this? Wake up people. Jesus is coming soon. He will come to judge this world and everything in it.

Buy one, give one for Kiwi families in need

Hi Neighbourly members, we all love a bargain, but buying a gift that really gives back seems like a much better way to kick off the holiday season, don’t you think?

We’re not sure who decided that Black Friday was suddenly a ‘thing’ down in our part of the world, so, as us Kiwis tend to do, we thought we’d put our own spin on it instead. One that is much more focused on community over consumerism, and equally about giving as it is about getting.

Curious?

Kicking off today and running through 'til Monday 2 December, we are doing our annual buy-one-give-one campaign.

That means for every Christmas Gift Box or Christmas Cracker set purchased, we’ll also give one to City Missions and food banks across the country to support families in need. Our aim is to give back to an organisation within the community that each of our customers live in.

The best part? There’s no car park congestion, over-crowded shopping malls or #walmartfights involved. You can shop online from the comfort of your own home, with the knowledge that you’re also doing good for fellow Kiwis in their own community.

You could say that our version of Black Friday is in fact a whole lot more colourful, adding brightness to what might otherwise be a fairly bleak Christmas for many families in New Zealand.

Together, we can make Christmas a bright and tasty time for families in need - and that sounds like a pretty good deal, don’t you think?!

Whether you’re buying for an avid foodie, a wannabe masterchef, a time-poor parent, or a student who needs help to step their signature spag bol up a notch, our Christmas Gift sets are guaranteed to be a crowd-pleaser, are all gluten-free, with no MSG, and all-natural!
