A former schoolmate posted this on Facebook - a poignant reminder about keeping current with your first aider and CPR skills.

There are certain moments in life that most of us will never experience. And in most cases, that's a good thing. Until last night, I had never held another human being as they took their last breath. It was the strangest mix of emotions and feelings---immense fear, anxiety, a sliver of hope for a miracle, anger, frustration, ignorance, and pure, unequivocal sadness and grief---but there was also an incredible sense of honor to be with that person as they left this earth. Yet I was consumed with tremendous guilt and an overwhelming sense of responsibility. Once I realized the gravity of the situation, I desperately tried to save his life as my mind went blank trying to remember the proper CPR procedures. As I proceeded with flawed chest compressions and inept MTM resuscitation attempts, I felt more helpless and ill-prepared than at any other time in recent memory. Fortunately, I had a calm and collected voice of experience and reason on the phone with 911 Emergency, who carefully coached me through each compression and breath before the paramedics arrived (to her, I offer immense thanks). I post this as a reminder to everyone to take stock of your CPR ability. It would be wise to retake the class every couple of years. I have no idea if being more confident in my CPR efforts would have made a difference for my friend, but I certainly wish I had brushed up on my training--if only for my own peace of mind. If you have never taken CPR training, please do so. You never know when you might find yourself in a situation similar to the one I was in last night. Unfortunately, my dear friend could not be revived, and I will have to deal with the guilt I have placed on myself. But I am still so incredibly honored to have been with him during those final moments, and to be able to hold him as he began his next adventure. Please...don't just read my advice. Heed my advice. It was a joy to know you, TJ, and a true privilege to call you my friend. Love you always."

Seems a waste of such good stock making ingredients.

Auckland will remain in lockdown until Sunday, a four-day extension of the lockdown which was meant to lift on Wednesday.

Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern said there were promising signs that the Government was getting on top of the virus, but a short extension was recommended by director-general of health Ashley Bloomfield.

On Sunday night Auckland would move down to level 2. The rest of the country would stay at level 2.

Ardern said the rest of the country needed to stay at an elevated alert level to mitigate the risk of cases leaving Auckland when interregional travel resumed. Click here to read more.

Youth in central Auckland have taken it upon themselves to clean up rubbish in the polluted Oakley Creek.

Eight teenagers cleared out 25 kilograms of rubbish in under an hour on August 9.

Salvation Army youth worker Raymond Tuala, 22, said the group is predominantly Māori, a culture that considers rivers important.

“When I asked the teens what they wanted to do, one of the things that came up was the pollution and rubbish in their local river,” he said.

“They did a pretty good job all around with the clean up.”

The teens are from Mt Roskill, Mt Albert and Lynfield in central Auckland.

In 2019, the creek was slapped with a public health warning after testing revealed high levels of faecal matter in the water.

Gumboots and gloves were worn as a safety measure during the clean up.

Tuala said he hopes to take the group out to clean the lake once a week when lockdown laws have relaxed.

“The young people were loving it,” he said.

“We’re hoping to spread awareness about how much pollution is actually going into the river.”

I asked if the proposed aquatic and sports center in our area was still being planned?
Response from Whau Board?

Kia ora Duncan,
Thank you for your enquiry.

As part of the 2018 Long-term Plan, the Whau Local Board successfully advocated to secure funding from Auckland Council’s Governing Body for the development of an aquatic and recreational facility in the Whau area. They local board has continued to advocate strongly to advance the site identification and implementation of this facility.
Unfortunately, the financial impact of COVID-19 has created uncertainty around the delivery of this project and the likelihood is that it will be further delayed. The Whau Local Board is absolutely committed to this project as it has been consistently identified as a high priority to the local communities.
Thank you.
