Kia ora neighbours, protesters have vowed to occupy Ōwairaka/Mt Albert 24/7 to block the planned removal of exotic trees.

The plan to cut down 345 non-natives is part of the Tūpuna Maunga Authority's restoration project, which will see 13,000 natives planted on the maunga.

But local residents are concerned about the mass felling and say they weren't adequately consulted.

The male Nyala - a type of antelope native to southern Africa - was found dead at the Zoo on Wednesday morning.

General manager of animal care and science Daniel Warsaw said they believe the Nyala got spooked from fireworks and ran into a fence.

“”What we've found on the post-mortem was that his death was caused by high levels of stress."
