Do you think the Hauraki Gulf needs more marine protection?
The Environmental Defence Society has called for the strengthening of the legislation governing the Hauraki Gulf Marine Park due to a lack of protection that the act currently provides.
The report outlines a recommendation for Auckland Council to treat marine protection in association with land use planning. An earlier report revealed that crayfish in the Hauraki Gulf are functionally extinct and snapper stocks are 20 per cent less than what they used to be. At present, only half a per cent of the gulf is a protected area and members of the Department of Conservation, Fisheries NZ and iwi all agree that this should be increased to 30%. There is currently no timeline on such an increase.
