"Consider that the kiore rat was introduced about the 13th and 14th centuries by Māori migrants. The ship rat came with European whalers, sealers and explorers almost 250 years ago.
If rats were going to annihilate birds they would have conceivably done that within perhaps 50 years of introduction. The decline in bird numbers did not happen even after two centuries of the ship rat's existence or six centuries of the kiore rat but in the last 20 or 30 years when mega-poison drops began"

Snake conservation in the Galapagos Islands
The Galapagos Islands hold a special place in the history of science thanks to their role in helping Charles Darwin formulate his ideas about evolution. More recently, these remote islands have taken centre stage in ecological research and conservation.
Dr Luis Ortiz-Catedral will talk about his research on Galapagos snakes, how a single 182-year old museum specimen holds the key to guide the largest ecological restoration project on these islands, and his mentorship programme to stimulate young Ecuadorians to pursue a career in conservation science.

1) Even if it's dark and nobody is around to see - pick up after your dog!
2) to runners who run through parks with un-leashed dogs - your dog is pooping behind you - you know this..you know I know this....but pretend you don't.
3) It doesn't matter if the poop is small ( by doggy standards), it still stinks and still gets stuck between the bumps of shoe soles...or...gag!...between toes.
4) People who don't pick up after their dog has pooped RIGHT on footpaths have reached a new kind of low , they should get THEIR noses rubbed in it!
5) Dog owners are obligated by law to pick up after their dogs. If I have to...surprise!.... so do you. There is a $300 fine if you're caught out.
6) Yes, he/she may be a shiny gift from heaven to you BUT their poop is still full of nasties - stink, viruses, parasites, more stink.
