Not all Ryman residents can claim viral internet sensation status – but Patrick Hogan Retirement Village’s Doug Lineham sure can!

It was during the live televised name reveal for Ryman Healthcare’s new Cambridge village on TVNZ’s Breakfast that presenter Matty McClean happened upon Doug.

The resulting hilarious sequence of dry, but complimentary-to-Ryman, one-liners left the audience calling for Doug to have his own show. One fan even touted him as the next PM!

What viewers didn’t know, however, was that behind the droll exterior, Doug was dealing with the loss of his beloved wife Jan.

Aucklanders are being urged to brush up on their recycling etiquette as new national standards come into effect at the beginning of next month.
Identical guidelines for what can and cannot be put into kerbside recycling bins across the country are due to come into force on February 1. Previously, local councils had different criteria for what recycling was accepted.
Items that will be accepted in kerbside recycling bins from February 1 include:
====================================================
Glass bottles and jars
Paper and cardboard
Plastic bottles, trays, and containers (grades 1, 2 and 5 only)
Tin, steel and aluminium cans
There are also some new items that will be excluded from February 1:
===================================================
Items less than 50mm (e.g caps, small cosmetic and spice containers)
Aerosol cans (steel and aluminium)
Liquid paperboard (Tetrapak and juice boxes)
Plastics 3, 4, 6 and 7
Aluminium foil and trays
All lids
Items over 4 litres
===============
Councillor Richard Hills encouraged Aucklanders to familiarise themselves with these new guidelines.
“By only putting in the right recyclable items into our bins, we are helping increase the quality of materials collected for recycling, which in turn reduces disposal costs.”
Hills, who is the chair of the Planning, Environment and Parks committee, said that this change is another important step along the path to Auckland Council's goal of zero waste by 2040.
“Reducing the use of single use items is the best way to reduce waste, following that, it is recycling right.”
The new guidelines also serve as a reminder of the issue of recycling contamination in Auckland.
Nearly a quarter of the material collected in Auckland’s kerbside recycling is contaminated with non-recyclable items, costing ratepayers an extra $3m a year in sorting and disposal.
Materials that show up in bins include food; textiles, carpets and clothes; nappies, medical waste and garden waste; soft plastic and plastic bags; bagged recycling and rubbish, and lithium-ion batteries and appliances.
For more information on the new recycling guidelines, see the Auckland Council website.

The paintwork has worn away in many places and the surfaces have degraded. Some areas where plantings were introduced have grown onto the paths. Does anyone on here know if maintenance of these have been budgeted for by council? Or is this considered infrastructure as roading? Is it practical to form a volunteer group to maintain them?

Auckland residents will be paying 6.2% more on average for trips on public transport from next month, Auckland Transport announced this morning.
The February 4 cost rise is to "help meet significant and sustained operating cost increases". It comes as part of Auckland Transport's (AT) annual review of fares against changes in operating costs and available budget.
Fares are typically updated in February, taking into account the cost of living and the investment needed to maintain and improve public transport services, it explained.
AT confirmed a weighted average increase of 6.2% will be implemented across its fare structure. For standard adult fares, this works out to be an increase of between $0.06 and $0.40 per journey on buses, trains and ferries.
AT's public transport and active modes director Stacey van der Putten said this year fares have increased to keep up with the "rising cost of running and maintaining Auckland's public transport network".
"In recent years we have been mindful of the impacts Covid-19 and extreme weather has had on our customers. We deferred last year's fare increase until April and in 2022 there was no increase at all," she said.
Van der Putten said operating costs have spiked dramatically over this period, driven by high inflation and staff shortages.
"Adjusting fares to raise revenue is unfortunately one of the steps AT needs to take to cover these higher costs," she said.
"We are committed to keeping public transport an affordable option for all Aucklanders, so the increase for longer journeys is only 1% - 4%."
