“Whether it was my neighbours or relatives or siblings, we were very familiar with what is called a hiding,” he recalls.

Will Sergeant was driving along Westhaven Drive, in central Auckland, on Wednesday afternoon when he heard a loud crash and saw a car go over the edge of the road into the harbour.

He leapt out of his vehicle, called out for help, and dived into the harbour after the car. He then set to work trying to free two women who were trapped inside.
