We've got 3 op shops in Pt Chevalier alone - The Homestead (cnr of Alberton and Point Chev Road) and the Hospice shop and St Vincents in the mall. Red Cross, The City Mission, SPCA, Salvation Army and St Johns all have op shops too. You could advertise on Neighbourly or Freecycle to give away. Putting items in good condition (not rubbish) out on the berm with a 'free' sign can work well too. Let's help each other out and give goods as long a life as we can. Think of all the resources that went into creating them and keep them out of landfill for as long as possible.

Bird feeding at park “actively discouraged” amid fowl and public health concerns

Feeding the birds at Western Springs park will now be “actively discouraged” with new signage and on-site education due to disease and environmental risks.

Large geese populations, water pollution, malnourished birds, and a lack of biodiversity are some of the ongoing issues caused by people feeding the birds, said bird expert.

The new policy was unanimously supported by the Waitemata Local Board last week and will begin with “interpretive signage and education promoted by park activities” that teaches the benefits of not feeding the park’s birds.

The increased population of fowl increases the threat of bird flu and salmonella, which is an issue in such a busy public park said Ian Mclean, Auckland representative of Birds New Zealand who advised the board on the policy.

Many of the geese and ducks have developed tumours and wing deformities from malnutrition, he said.

“From an animal welfare point of view, it’s pretty poor. If anyone owned those geese they would be facing charges from the SPCA for the ill treatment of animals.

“If we stop feeding birds, we stop relying on volunteers to pick up dead and dying birds over the summer and taking them to bird rescue or burying them,” he stressed.

Pippa Coom, Waitemata Local Board chair, said there is currently some signage that discourages feeding birds at the park, however a stronger approach is needed to stop all feeding.

“It is a cultural change because people have become used to feeding ducks at the park, but what we know now about the negative impact is that we really do need to change that.”

The park, next to the Auckland zoo, is a popular destination for locals and tourists with its wildlife and natural spring lake at its centre, which has been a popular spot for bird feeding.

"Halloween has been given the all-clear by Covid-19 experts, however, trick-or-treaters are being urged to wash their hands often and keep a record of where they go.

Professor David Hayman, of Massey University, said it might pay to let children know ahead of Halloween if they're unwell they won't be able to participate.

He says parents should keep track of which houses children visit for trick-or-treating and to wash their hands regularly.

Mt Eden resident Liz McCarthy-Edwards is elated Halloween can go ahead.

'On our street, Burnley Tce in Mt Eden, we have hundreds of kids and they're like locusts. It creates a wonderful community vibe on our street.'

The Ministry of Health has no issues with Halloween this year either, however, director of public health Dr Caroline McElnay would like people to take a precautionary approach towards celebrations.

'Additionally, if people are not comfortable with people coming on to their property, they should also put a sign out,' McElnay said.

University of Otago epidemiologist Professor Michael Baker said he sees nothing wrong with people celebrating Halloween at alert level 1.

'Everybody has been in their bubbles, this is a chance to get out and reconnect with people.' "

We are about to move out of our beautiful home in Grey Lynn which sadly means our wonderful housekeeper who we have relied upon for over 10 years, needs a new job.

Do you know anyone who would like a hand maintaining their property?

For us she has cleaned the inside of our home (2 bedrooms, 2 bathrooms, 2 lounges and a catering size kitchen) and also maintained the garden (weeding, pruning, general tidying). A total of 1.5 days / week.

We feel very grateful for her help and would like to help her find more work.
