Auckland Heritage Festival to uncover secrets and stories of the past

See Aotea Square in its former glory using a new augmented reality app bringing the 1800s to 2020; hear why women weren’t expected to respond to the call of nature in public places until 1910; and prepare to be intrigued by unexpected artefacts found in the rubble of recent city works.

These are just some of the stories Auckland Heritage Festival is weaving into words, walks, pictures, parks, talks, poetry and songs as Auckland Council prepares to pack well over 100 free and low-cost events into two weeks from September 26 to October 11.

Event holders are set up to follow the Covid-19 protocols required at the prevailing alert level and mass gathering limit. However, if a 10-person mass gathering limit remains in place on 26 September, every endeavour will be made to move events online.

Councillor Alf Filipaina said there is something in the festival’s storytelling for everyone including special events for children during the school holidays.

The programme of events has been designed to entertain, inform and enlighten with 2020’s intriguing theme: Uncover secrets and stories of Tāmaki Makaurau.

The 2020 festival programme will go live at heritagefestival.co.nz on September 10.

To the Pink Panther detective who delivered to my letterbox in Godden Cresent but kindly put it in a blue bag with dog paws, you hit the wrong address, the little dog I look after doesn’t do dumps that big thank you. Next time you consider such a drastic unkind action and it obviously annoys you,go and talk to the owner because I wouldn’t be too happy that someone hasn’t picked up after them. Mind you with people who can’t leave there phones at home and don’t know what there dog is doing of course there’s going to be this sort of incident. The poopy bags were quite nice and your welcome to leave some EMPTY ONES in my letterbox as a way of an apology.

Rubbish collectors in Auckland have seen an increase in single-use face masks being littered around the city.

Auckland Mayor Phil Goff said it served as a reminder to Aucklanders that any used masks should be put in the bin.

Goff said rubbish collectors had reported seeing an increase of masks left in parks, reserves and on the streets in the last few weeks.

“It is great that so many Aucklanders are following health advice by wearing a mask, but we also need to remember to throw disposable masks in the bin,” he said.

“We all know the importance of being a tidy Kiwi and this is no different. Used masks being thrown on the street is not only a health risk but is also terrible for our environment.

Goff said ideally, people should dispose of masks in their bins back at home so the risk was lowered for staff who collected rubbish from public bins.

Those who did choose to litter could face fines of up to $400, Goff said.

”The council’s enforcement team is working at Level 2 and I encourage Aucklanders to report littering if they see it by calling 0800 NO DUMP.”

Goff also encouraged Aucklanders to try to use reusable masks where possible.
