Are you looking for a new pantry staple? A Canterbury restaurateur has launched his own te reo Māori-branded tomato sauce after boycotting another for “bastardising” the language.
Fush owner Anton Matthews has teamed up with Barkers to produce Kīnaki Tomato after removing Watties from his Christchurch restaurant because the company poked fun at Māori place names in an advertising campaign.
Matthews, who has become well-known for championing the country’s indigenous language, is proud to have te reo Māori on sauces displayed on his tables.
When he went in search of a new sauce to accompany his kaimoana (fish) and chips in January, they picked a sauce they loved, and asked the Geraldine-based condiment producer if it could collaborate on a label.
“I’m really stoked that they’ve taken a chance on us.”

Aircraftman (AC) Suhailjeet Singh, 20, immigrated with his family from New Delhi, India, in 2003, and is a former student at Rosehill College.
“I am a hands-on person with interest in cars and motorbikes. My cousin, who is a mechanical engineer, suggested that I should find out about careers in the RNZAF and apply,” he said.
“He nagged me until I did find out the necessary information.”
Singh is leaning the aircraft technician trade, which includes working on airframes, engines, structure, modifications and troubleshooting of aircraft.
“The recruit training is very challenging as it takes you from a civilian to a serviceperson in 14 weeks. You are challenged physically, mentally and sometimes emotionally but at the end of it you know you have done the hard work and you can wear the uniform with pride as you have earned it,” he said.
“I have learned a lot during my training and I’ve formed lifelong friendships with many fellow air men and women. Being the only Indian, and the only Sikh male in this group, I did not feel alone or apart.“
RNZAF’s dress code accommodates people with different religious backgrounds, such as issuing material for turbans as part of the uniform.
Singh is allowed to keep on him the “five Ks” required as part of his faith: uncut hair (Kesh), a wooden comb (Kangha), an iron bracelet (Kara), a cotton undergarment (Kachera) and an iron dagger (Kirpan). He is also an ardent student of the Sikh martial art Gatka.
“We are a mixture of New Zealanders from different ethnicities and cultural backgrounds and come from many different families but we now also belong to another bigger family, the RNZAF,” he said.
“This may not be the country of our birth or heritage but it is our home and I, and hopefully others, would feel privileged to have the right to defend this land and waters, to keep all New Zealand families and communities safe.”

During the announcement he acknowledged the hard work of the contact tracing team who have been at the forefront of helping to contain community transmission, and also the primary care workforce who are putting in long hours at testing stations in the region. Since August 11 they have identified 3,162 close contacts, and contacted 2,984 folk who are now in self isolation playing a vital part in containing the virus. Dr Rainger also gave the COVID-19 case update and talked about the work of the contract tracing team.

Fire crews were called to THL Rentals on Richard Pearse Drive, in Māngere, around 5am on Thursday.
Shift manager Daniel Nicholson said 19 fire trucks were at the scene at 6.30am, and the fire was at the fifth alarm stage.
A Stuff photographer on site said the fire was under control by around 7.30am.
Grant Webster, chief executive of THL, which owns Maui, Britz and Mighty campervan companies, said no staff were at the site when the fire started and it would be “inoperable for some weeks”.
There was minimal damage to camper vans but “severe” damage to the building.
A statement from Webster on the NZX site said there appeared to be damage to about 10 motorhomes and “substantial damage” to the building that houses the office and workshop.
