Fire crews were called to THL Rentals on Richard Pearse Drive, in Māngere, around 5am on Thursday.

Shift manager Daniel Nicholson said 19 fire trucks were at the scene at 6.30am, and the fire was at the fifth alarm stage.

A Stuff photographer on site said the fire was under control by around 7.30am.

Grant Webster, chief executive of THL, which owns Maui, Britz and Mighty campervan companies, said no staff were at the site when the fire started and it would be “inoperable for some weeks”.

There was minimal damage to camper vans but “severe” damage to the building.

A statement from Webster on the NZX site said there appeared to be damage to about 10 motorhomes and “substantial damage” to the building that houses the office and workshop.

Hi neighbours,

An Auckland Transport and Counties Manukau DHB vehicle have collided on a south Auckland road.

The incident occurred at around 10.30am on Wednesday on the corner of Coronation Rd and Hastie Ave in Māngere Bridge.

Resident Angela Dunsmuir said the intersection is dangerous as visibility on the corner is poor for drivers creating a blind spot.

“It’s on a hill and people seem to speed coming up to it,” she said.

Police, fire and ambulance attended the scene, and transported one patient in a serious condition to Middlemore Hospital. Another patient in a minor condition was treated at the scene.

Do you think this Mangere intersection needs safety improvements?

A Mangere resident has delivered thousands of food parcels to aid struggling families in the Covid-19 pandemic.

Darryl Vincent Evans, 56, is the chief executive of the Mangere Budgeting Services Trust in south Auckland, which has an in-house food bank.

Evans provided 23,000 food parcels to families and vulnerable pensioners during the first lockdown.

Across the whole of 2020 his organisation has delivered 33,000 food parcels across south Auckland.

Evans said the level of need “grew exponentially” throughout lockdown.

“We went from an organisation delivering 200 to 300 parcels a week, to providing 2850 in our busiest week,” he said.

Evans is a finalist in the Westfield Local Heroes competition, an annual event that awards $10,000 grants to community heroes.

Evans said he is “overwhelmed” to be nominated.

“The purpose of our organisation is to ensure every family have food on the table, and every family has access to essential wrap around services,” he said.

Winners are decided by a popular vote, and Evans said he would put the money towards a second food bank van.

The voting period for Westfield Local Heroes opened on Tuesday 25 August and closes on Monday 14 September.

1 in 4 New Zealand adults will suffer from a mental disorder or distress at some point in their lives. When they do, let’s make sure they don’t have to go it alone. To create safer, more caring communities we need to not only look after ourselves but those around us as well.

For the month of September, we want to use our voice to raise awareness for mental health and well-being. Perhaps consider sharing a cuppa with someone you know who could use the support or challenge your family and friends to unplug from social media for the entire month to improve their well-being. If you or someone you know is going through a rough patch, don’t forget you can call or text 1737 anytime for FREE support from a trained counsellor.

This month also coincides with World Suicide Prevention Day (September 10th) followed by Mental Health Awareness Week (21 - 27 September).

However you choose to take part, make sure to tag us in your posts + use the following hashtag so we can see how you’re cultivating better mental health for yourself or in your community this month:
